    Computer keeps shutting down

My computer keeps turning itself off. Mostly happens when a cd rom is in but has happened without one. I have run VET and no virus's have shown up.
When it starts up it has 3 lines of TVDUMP Blah blah. Any ideas??

Not quite sure what TVDUMP Blah Blah means but the 3 lines are probably a technical explanation of what happened. Could you write out exactly what it says and let us know? We'll try to make sense of it for you

Have you installed any new software (e.g. new version of Internet Explorer or MSN Messenger) or any new hardware (e.g. printers, scanners, etc) just before you started having problems?

I've found out that the TV Dump is caused by Zone Alarm, but still can't fix it.
Now it's shutting down when I run virus scan, and defragment.
I have been told to put a motherboard monitor on it, which I have done, but I have no idea how it works.
I can't remember what's been installed as it started happening a year ago. I took it to the computer shop, they charged me $130 and it came back them same. I wonder if they couldn't fix it, what hope do I have?

Here is a long thread Re: TVDUMP:

    Set tvdumpflags=10

Besides that you can try this:

    1. Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Command prompt only.

    2. At the command prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER.

    3. Select a previous copy of your registry with a date prior to the problem, and then press R to restore the registry.

    4. Press ENTER when you are prompted to restart your computer.

    OR:

    1. Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Windows 98 Startup menu appears, and then choose Command prompt only.

    2. At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press ENTER.

If you mean you did a full install of 98 after a format & you still have a shut down problem I would suspect your hardware.

Might want to try this RAM test:

Also to check your hard drive here is a list of disgnostics:
