Most likely the HDD fails to boot due to either missing or corrupt windows installation. Could also be some prob with the partition. What about booting up with a DOS/Windows bootdisk and then check the HDD ?

Well, i found a bootdisk, and i started to install the new operating system. I get to the step where it partitions the hard drive. Then, i get the message:'Verifying drive integrity". then when it reaches 4%, i get the message "Write protect error writing fixed disk". Does that mean my hard drive is toast?

Erm ..... you're not talking about Windows 98 any more, are you?

But yes, it does sound like your drive is giving up. Does it make any strange noises?
