    Screen Resolution

I have recently had to have a new hard drive fitted and now my screen resolutions are stuck in 640x480 16 colour. I gather from previous threads that it is a driver problem. Using Everest Home Edition I have found the following information:

Summary/Display/Video Adapter - Standard PCI Graphics adapter (VGA)
    Summary/Display/3D accelerator - ATI Rage 128VR
    Summary/Display/Monitor - Axion CA - 1454 [14" CRT] (9011901000335)

    motherboard/chipset - intel 82440BX/ZX

Can anyone tell me where I can download a driver to get the full range of screen resolution options back?

    Thanks.

Go to www.ati.com and look up the graphics drivers for an old ATI Rage 128. Download and install those drivers. This should fix your problem.

    It hasn't worked I'm afraid. Still stuck in 640 x 480 16 colour.

I now get an error message at start "The ATITASK.EXE file is linked to missing export ATICWDDE>DLL:Init.

Any further help will be gratefully received.

    As to your error:

ATITASK.EXE comes with your video driver. This file seems to need a
more recent version of ATICWDDE.DLL than being installed by Windows.

From your Display Properties page, select Settings -> Advanced to bring ATI Control Panel.

In ATI Control Panel, select the Options tab.

    Uncheck the following:

    1. "Enable ATI taskbar icon application"
    2. "Show ATI icon on taskbar"

    Click Apply.

You may need to restart your system. This should remove the ATITask.exe to execute during boot up.

Or start > run > msconfig & uncheck ATITask.exe from starting.

I will keep an eye out for other display options. Just thought I'd pass this on.

go to start > run > dxdiag

open the display tab & tell us what is listed under Device as well as Driver

Was hoping to be able to paste the dxdiag page but it won't work.

    Here is the info:

    Device
Name: Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
    Manufacturer: (Standard Display Types)
    Chip Type: n/a
    DAC Type: n/a
    Approx. Total Memory:
    Current Display Mode: 640 x 480 (4 bit)
    Monitor: Plug and Play Monitor

    Drivers
    Main Driver: vga.drv
    Version: 4.10.0000.1998 (English)
    WHQL Logo'd: Yes
    Mini VDD:
    VDD: *vdd
    DDI:

The notes recognise that the system is using a generic driver and ask me to install the video driver provided by the hardware manufacturer which, of course, I don't have.

    Hope this helps.

    Roger.

    Have you tried this driver:

    Knowledge Base

    Follow this path:

    Windows 98 Drivers and Software

    RAGE

    RAGE 128 / 128 PRO

Windows 98/ME Display Driver build 4.13.7192

    .

also do you have DirectX 9.0?

No luck I'm afraid. This was the driver I installed before by getting a mate to download it to disc and then running the disc. This I time I downloaded straight from the net. I get an error box during the ATI set up procedure titled "Severe". The message is "This driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed on your system. The only option is to click OK which seems to terminate the installation although the file C/ATI/Support/WME_R128_4_13_7192 is now on my C drive.

Could it be something to do with the bloke who fitted the new hard drive using a different monitor when he installed the operating system?

    Still grateful.

    Roger.

Possibly, although I note from one of your earlier posts that the monitor is being recognised as a 14" monitor. Is that what you've got? If it is, then it's more likely that he just didn't bother to install your graphics card drivers after installing Windows.
