Is my computer dead?
I apologize if this isn't in the right place, I'm kind of in a hurry here. lol
See, I think my desktop died, and the laptop I'm on now has modem issues. So, I don't know how long I have before the modem may decide to kick off.
Anyhow..back to the main problem. My desktop - a Compaq - running Windows ME went wacky. It will start, but once it's done, all that's showing is the background image. No start button, no icons, nothing!
I've tried starting it in Safe mode, but that only changes the way the background image looks, it brings nothing else up.
Is it dead? Is there some way I can get to the restore function?
Right now, I'm baffled. This morning it was working fine. Then I was online, and a pop up came up telling me that windows firewall detected someone trying to gain access to my computer, did I want to learn how to protect it. I clicked yes, but it did nothing. Then I tried to run NoAdware to detect any bugs, worms etc...but it wouldn't open, so I restarted.
That's when it started the problem with nothing but the background image.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Do you have the ME CD?
Or any restore disks?

Thanks Jephree! I meant to post earlier, but I've been online with a service tech.
I thought of that after I posted here, and I did the User Backup feature. Then did the Factory Restore. Thennn, did the User Restore, but guess what?
It also restored the freakin' problem. Nothing but the background image, no operating system!
So, I still can't access any of my files or programs.
They suggested that I put the computer back into 'problem mode' and try reinstalling Windows ME. That MIGHT at least get me to where I can access things so that I don't lose anything.
I can't do this right now as I don't have any disks to save the boot file to (and can't find the original ME disk!!), so I don't know yet.
I'm praying. I had an HTML program that contained the whole f'in website I've been building, but most importantly, the only baby pictures I have of my son from in the hospital to 5 months are there (I'm an idiot and didn't upload them somewhere or save them to disk!).
It's aggravating, cause I can SEE the stinkin' user files on the D drive, but I can't access them!!! GRR!!

Worst case scenerio you can put that drive on another computer as a slave & most likely access your data.
Best of luck to ya!
