Dial up connection window auto display on startup

I have just re-installed windows 98 onto an old pc and whenever I log in, the Dial Up Connection window automatically displays on the screen before my desktop icons have loaded and then I can't get rid of it! Clicking on close or cancel doesn't work. Also, if I do connect I have to enter my password every time and I cannot check the 'save password' box. Please help.

Sounds like something is set to run on startup and connect to the Internet to check for updates.

Go to the Start Menu > Programs > Startup.

What's in there? Anything you could delete out?

Also, go to Start Menu > Run. At the Run prompt, type regedit and click OK.

When the Registry Editor starts, go into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion (I think) > Run.

    What's listed in there?

Following your advice, I have opened the registry and under 'current version' and 'run' the following is listed:

    Default
    ccApp
    Critical Update
    IS CfgWiz
    LoadPowerProfile
    ScanRegistry
    Symantec Core LC
    Symantec NetDrv
    System Tray
    Task Monitor
    URLLSTCK.exe

    I hope this helps........................??!

There's quite a lot of entries there but several of them are just for your Norton Internet Security. The one that could be a problem there is 'Critical Update'.

Create a backup of the 'Run' branch of the registry but going into Regedit again and highlighing 'Critical Update' in the list. Then go to the Registry menu and select the Export Registry File menu item. Check that the Export Range shown at the bottom is set to 'Selected branch', then choose a directory and filename (such as registry.reg on the desktop) to save it to.

Once you've got this backup, delete the 'Critical Update' entry. Reboot and see if it's fixed.

If it's not, double-click the registry backup file that you created and it will put the 'Critical Update' item back in the right place.

Either way, let us know what happens

By the way, did you check the 'Startup' group in the Windows Start Menu ?

Like altering system files, modifying the registry can be risky and D-A-L.com and its members cannot accept liability for any adverse effects caused by following advice freely given on this site.

You could have done that with Hijack This DJNafey . I'm going to have the phrase "Close all browser windows, restart Hijack This and put a checkmark next to the following entries" copyrighted
