Hey, My dad and I were trying to clean some junk out of his computer and we deleted a file that he needed to run Windows 98 se. Someone told me that I could reload windows into the computer again. If anyone knows how to do that I would greatly appreciate your help. I want to try and fix it before he throws the computer away.

Re-installing Windows is not a small job and should only be used as a last resort - if you aren't comfortable with re-installing drivers and programs etc (and potentially having to wipe everything off the system completely and start from scratch), then you may wish you never started it.

What was the file that you deleted off the system that means Windows won't run? It would normally be easier just to restore that file.

You say that it needs this file to run Windows? What happens without it. Does it stop with an error message whilst Windows is starting up ... before it gets to the desktop icons?

Hello, I can't remember the name of the file right off the top of my head but when he turns the computer on it says " Can't finish loading windows because of a missing file".
I will get all of the information about the file and get what exactly it says at startup and I will let you know. If you could help us with this problem we would greatly appreciate it.

Can you try booting up in Safe Mode and see if that works? To do that, switch on the PC and, after 3 seconds, keep pressing F8 until the Startup Menu appears. Choose the 'Safe Mode' option from the menu. Let us know if that gets into Windows OK.

Do you have a Windows 98 Startup Disk or Boot Disk - a floppy disk that you can put in to start the PC up when you're having problems?

Hey. Thanks for all your help. My dad got the computer fixed. He had to put his original windows 95 disk in and then he upgraded to windows 98 again. I appreciate all of your time and effort in helping me with this. God Bless You and your Family.
