Unable to startup windows 2000 desktop
hello,
I am win2000 OS system.Recently when I restart my system cmd.exe executes and DOS prompt window pop up with following message
FORMAT volume [/FS:file-system] [/V:label] [/Q] [/A:size] [/C] [/X]
C:\>
I feel there is some virus which is trying to do so.But I scanned the whole system with AVG7.0 anti virus .It initially indicated that some files are affected by Torgan Horse virus.
But I healed these files with same anit-virus and ran the scan again then it
did not indicate any files with virus.
But still whenever I restart the system the same dos prompt appears and I am unable to view the desktop icons and task bar also.
Does anybody know how to deal with this problem...
thanks in advance

Quite a few people have had this problem recently. Sounds like you have a virus on your PC which is trying to format your hard disk and wipe everything off of it when you start up. Fortunately, the virus doesn't seem to work so it doesn't actually manage to wipe your hard disk.
Have you tried starting in Safe Mode? When the PC starts up and you get a couple of black screens reporting what hardware has been found in the PC, keep pressing the F8 key on your keyboard . After a few seconds, you should see a boot menu. Choose the option to load Windows in Safe Mode (or Safe Mode With Networking Support if you have that option).
Run your anti-virus software and make sure it is up-to-date (you may need to run its online update facility). Do a full virus scan on the system.
Apparently, Norton Anti-Virus can find the problem and fix it so I would hope that other virus scanners will as well.
Let us know if that helps
