Please help - startup and shutdown problems on Windows 98

Problem: 1. Computer freezes upon shutdown - After "Window is shutting down" screen is displayed, computer beeps once and then freezes.
Problem: 2. Upon booting, an error message is displayed. (I have tried to resolve this by looking at other postings but I couldn't do it...)

    Error message:
Microsoft Workgroups ODI/NDIS3 Mapper Version 2.0
    Error: Cannot find LSL
    ODI/NDIS3 Mapper: Initialization failure
    Press any key to continue...

I would be very grateful if someone could resolve this problem as I've spent 2 days trying to fix this problem but have not managed.
    Thank you very much.

Regarding the startup issue, I found a suggestion on the Internet that REM'ing out this line of your Autoexec.bat may help:
    c:\windows\odihlp.exe

Shutdown problems have always plagued Windows 98 PCs. There are 3 separate fixes available from Microsoft for it. One deals with large hard disks not clearing their cache quick enough, one deals with mapped network drives not being un-mapped before the shutdown sequence completes and the other, I think, is to do with power management.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and see if you can search for 'shutdown' or 'drive' entries for Windows 98. If you can't find them, let me know - I've got them all downloaded onto my PC ready for whenever I build a Win98 system so I can probably help you out if you can't get them off the Microsoft site

Thank you DJ Nafey for the detailed help - I am going to try them out.

I tried searching for Windows 98 downloads from Microsoft but I couldn't seem to find them... Could you possibly upload them here...?

    Thanks a bunch!

I couldn't get the files uploaded here as the limit on attachments is very small so I've uploaded them to my web site and created a new Downloads page for them. There's a "Downloads" banner towards the top of my home page - you can't miss it

    DJ Nafey,

I've gone to your website to download the three update files you've
put there for me. Thank you so much.

    I have:
    1) done as you said about REMing out the line in autoexec.bat - and the annoying message is no longer showing up during booting.
    and,
    2) recently ran a registry checker and let it fix some errors in my registry - since then, the computer shuts down without freezing about 90% of the time.

It's great that you had let me know about the correct line to REM out because I was unchecking the wrong lines and it hadn't worked before.
I've yet to install the 3 files I've downloaded from your site but I think I might do that when the computer starts having frequent shutdown problems again.

Thank you very much for the spot-on advice you've given me.
    I really appreciate it.

    Sincerely,

Sounds like a sensible plan - 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', as the saying goes. This is very appropriate for Windows 98!

    Glad I could help

I can foresee this thread being 'hijacked' by lots of people with a similar problem so I'm going to close it now but, if you need more help, send me or one of the other moderators a PM and we'll open it up again.
