Problem with hotfix KB891711

Re: Problem with hotfix KB891711
Hi everyone...I have had the same issue as you all (I run Win98SE, Winproxy and PC-cillin 2005). After updating, when I tried to open Explorer the system would crash. I found KB891711 in system configuration (very strange) and disabled it, then restarted my PC and everything works fine now.
I also found that PC-cillin had detected (and deleted) the virus TROJ_SMALL.AC
http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...=TROJ_SMALL.AC
at the same time as the update....could this be a coincidence or has this happened to anyone else?

I run Win98SE and am currently suffering from this.
How do I disable this thing?

You should see it in Add/ Remove programs via the Control Panel.
If applicable in 98SE click the box that says "Show Updates".
& or uncheck it via | start | run | msconfig | startup

Thank you very much for those instructions. I'll try it tonight when I get home, and I'll leave an update here.

unchecking it from msconfig was sufficent to stop it from running. My 98SSE system however also started having shutdown hangups. I figured out this was my freebe virus checker, so I turned it off too. I'm still having some issues with internet access, the use of IE and Outlook, but it may take me a while to figure out what exactly the causes are. My system is definately sicker than it was before KB891711 struck.

Did you remove it from Add/ Remove Programs?
Also you can Boot to a DOS Prompt & type: scanreg /restore
to restore your registry in 98.

Hi Pete
I would have given you the same advice as jephree, but it sounds like you were having problems with your computer before the issue with KB891711.
Turning off your Anti-virus programme isn't really a good idea if you are still on the net, as a virus could have come down with the Windows update. I would suggest that you fully scan your computer, just to be sure that it's not anything else causing problems.
AVG Free Edition is a good Anti-Virus programme: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
KB891711 also causes conflicts if you are running a proxy server or webfiltering.

I am running Windows ME. Since I downloaded the hotfix, IE had been crashing as well as Netscape and Firefox. I removed KB891711.exe using the Add/Remove program utility in Control Panel. Immediately, my system crashed completely. Error message on start-up indicated that C:\Windows\System\VM32.VXD file was missing or corrupted. I could not reboot, even into safemode. I was forced to delete Windows and re-install it, in order to gain access.
When I updated Windows, I downloaded everything EXCEPT that Hotfix.
So far, the system seems to be working. But I'm telling you, I think Microsoft's got a BIG problem on their hands.

Hi Folks,
I've just had the same issue.
I received a "Critical Update Notification" for Win98 and it contained two small files, the second one was KB891711.
I downloaded them both and they installed successfully, apparently.
Later in the day I started getting "blue screens" and this is extremely unusual for me. Eventually I had to restart my pc and after loading windows as far as IE6 it hung up and the only thing I could do was restart in Safe Mode.
However, I noticed that along with Winmgmt etc there was an entry in the config for KB891711, very odd.
I went to "add/remove" programs and removed it and since then all has been back to normal.
I contacted MS about this and there is an FAQ that says KB891711 is a replacement for a previous patch, but when I looked up this old patch, it was NOT applicable to Win98/SE/ME.
However, every time I connect to the net I get a critical update warning saying I need it!! (I'm ignoring it until MS sort it out).
Regards.

MEGA Thanks
I down loaded the KB891711 update last night and every thing was fine until I turned on the computer today. I was getting a blue screen fatal exception 06 at the end of the start up. Thanks for the great advice; it ended an hour of swearing. To avoid getting the critical update warning saying that you need it!! (until MS sorts it out). Instead of uninstalling just uncheck it via | start | run | msconfig | startup. Windows update knows it’s there but since it isn’t active you shouldn’t have any issues (at least my kids older 98 computer has been running fine all day since I disabled).
