When you upgrade Win98SE to WinXP using a Windows XP Upgrade CD, there should be an option to keep a backup of your old operating system. After the install, you'll hopefully have a running copy of Windows XP. Most of the drivers would have upgraded themselves, some probably wouldn't. Some of your programs will work, some probably won't. Your data (e.g. "My Documents" folder) should all still be there.

To go back to Windows 98SE, the theory is that you can remove Windows XP and return to your backed up operating system. I believe you could do this in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.

When you get Windows 98SE back, you'll probably have to re-install some of the drivers and programs but, again, your data should still be retrievable.

Note that, if there was a hard disk format involved at any point in that process, you didn't do an "upgrade" install and there will be no option to recover what you formatted off of the hard disk.

    ok...thanks!!!!!

One main concern abt upgrading to xp!

Well I have this modem.....I lost the cd for the driver....will win xp load it for me?? how can i check for sure??

i did the system compatiblilty test and it said that my modem driver might not work and need additional files????? or something like that. does that mean they find my modem driver in their list err i'll have to find it myself......just the modem driver i'm worrieda bt cos i have the other cd's and if i cant get onloine getting drivers will be a snap...hopefully

If the Hardware Compatibility List says that the modem might not be detected properly, then download the latest drivers from the modem manufacturer's web site onto a disk before you do the XP upgrade.
