First thing would be to run a "thorough" Scandisk in Windows.
Go to the Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Scandisk. Select the Thorough option. This will not only do the standard files / folders / file allocation table checks but it will also do a physical check on every sector of your hard disk - in layman's terms, that means it will look for damage on the disk that cannot be fixed and will gradually get worse and worse.
Let us know the results of the Scandisk. If it gets to the end of the Scandisk, it should display a summary showing lots of different information, probably headed up by a statement saying "Scandisk found errors and fixed them all". One of the bits of information should say "0 files in bad sectors". If there's more than zero, then there's a problem.
By the way, a thorough Scandisk will probably take a couple of hours on that PC, so set it off and leave it to get on with it for a while. Check on it every 10 minutes and you should see a counter going up each time.
