windows 98 startup
I would like to run the maintainance wizard. How do I start my computer in the 'safe mode'?
-
IIRC in 98 keep tapping the F5 key after the BIOS finishes it's routines, may be F8
-
Yes, that's right HippyWarlock. Pressing F8 will display the startup menu with options for Safe Mode, Command Prompt Only, etc. However, pressing F5 instead will bypass the menu and go straight into Safe Mode.
Renu49 - why do you need to go into Safe Mode to run the maintenance wizard?

re: Windows 98 Startup
Thanks HippyWarlock and DJNafey. I did manage to get into safe mode. I was once told that it was safer/better to run the maintainance wizard in safe mode - for some reason the task never got completed otherwise.

Hmmm, never heard of that before - if Scandisk or Defrag don't complete, it might mean that there's something wrong with your hard disk
Still, if you're happy doing it that way and it works, then I guess there's no need to do a big investigation into why it runs better in Safe Mode. Are you happy that that's resolved and we can close this thread?

yes we can close this thread. I do believe my hard disk is a bit 'confused' but I don't know any better. so far so good!!

OK, thanks
