    I hate Windows '98

Hey guys, I really need some help here. My Dad asked me to fix his old Compaq PC but I’m having a bit of a nightmare with the CD/DVD-rom drive. Whenever I insert a disk (CD or DVD) the picture icon appears above the drive letter (so I know the drive’s reading the disk) but the second I double click on it or try and execute a program I get the dreaded BSOD (blue screen of death). It babbles on about “a fatal exception has occurred at 0E something VXD something SCSI 1 HLP something” etc

So far I’ve tried virus scans, spyware/adware scans, windows cleanup/defrag/scandisk, complete windows re-install, changing drivers, pretty much everything apart from completely formatting the hard drive (which I don’t really want to do).

I’m going to post the exact error line and PC specs as soon as I can but I’m in work at the moment and just thought I’d try posting in case anybody’s had any previous experience with this.

By the way it’s Windows ’98 SE

    Thanks in advance.

    Hiya,

As soon as you can get the full error that should help point us in the right direction I would think Gabriel

It does sound like a driver error. Note that, if the error message includes the word "SCSI" like you said, then it's a SCSI drive type, not a typical IDE drive. This means that there's also a SCSI controller inside the PC - either built onto the motherboard or, more often, as a separate PCI / ISA card inside the PC. This will also have its own drivers that should be checked out. Have a look for it in Device Manager (if it helps, most SCSI cards are manufactured by Adaptec, so you might find it listed as that).

looks like a VXD problem at first glance, have you run System File Checker?

    <Start><Run><SFC>
