Help, problem with computer, maybe registry keys
Okay, let me start by stating that I only know the basics about computers, so anyone who has some suggestions may have to get detail-specific.
My OS is Windows 98se, and my computer's an HP laptop. I've also got roadrunner cable.
Here's my problem:
After making the huge mistake of downloading a software called "Roboform" onto my computer, I had a big problem with viruses and trojans. I finally managed to kill all of them (I think), but not without some casualties on my side. I think I might've deleted something that I shouldn't have, but I was sure that I only deleted those files that were created on certain dates.
Anyway, now whenever I boot up my computer, a blue screen with a box titled Microsoft Registry Checker pops up with this message:
"Registry Repair Results
Windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space on your Windows drive. If that doesn't work then you will need to install Windows to a new directory."
. . . as obvious as it may be to others, I don't know what this is talking about. Maybe something wrong with one of my registry keys? A missing registry key? I don't know. If that is the case, would someone tell me where I can go online to download registry keys? I've already tried going to the microsoft.com website to see if maybe downloading "critical updates" might help me with my problem, but the site requires using IE, and my IE browser gets frozen on the page I need to go to on that site.
Anyway, I can still get around on my computer, but it's a real pain. I can't just click on anything, I've got to right click just to access any desktop file, and then I have to use my tool bar to open any file or program inside of those files, and whenever I do for the first time, this is the message that I get:
"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly."
My netscape browser's just about the only thing I can just left click on and have it behave "normally", so accessing the internet's not a problem.
If anyone knows what the problem is and would also happen to know of a good solution, please, do tell.
Oh, another thing. I do have a systems recovery disk, but unfortunately, it carries the Windows Millenium ME OS, and I really don't want to reinstall that crap back onto my computer. I paid some guy $60 to install Windows 98se for me back whenever, and I really don't want to have to go back to him again, especially since he's upped his price to $80 for the same thing. I've tried a search to find another systems recovery disk for my computer featuring the 98 OS, but nothing came up, and the only thing being offered on my computer's manufacturer's site is the same thing I got now . . . so if anyone would happen to know where I can find what I'm looking for as far as recovery disks are concerned, I'd appreciate it a lot if you'd share.
Past that, I don't know what else I need to write. If you have any further questions, I'll be here for the next 15 minutes or so, and then I'll have to go, but I'll be back again tomorrow to follow up.
Please, please, please, if you can offer anything that would help, I'll owe you my computer's life.
Thanks.
EDIT: Or maybe if you know of a program or download that's made specifically to scan your computer to find missing/deleted registry keys and help replace them, then that would be great . . . of course, if missing registry keys are my problem.
