for some reason that i cant figure out my computer restarts on its own all my virus scanner is updated regularly and i use spybot search & destroy. i thought it might be the soft ware for my kodak camera but not for sure as it did it even when it was turned off. any ideas on where to look to fix this problem would be very very helpful
greetings dronestar
in xp this option is available dont know about 2000
You can turn off the feature that instructs XP to autostart on system
failure. Right click on My Computer and select Properties->Advanced
Tab->Startup & Recovery section->Settings button->uncheck "Automatically
restart" Apply. This will give you a blue screen with info on it and you
will have to manually restart the computer. The info might give you an idea
whether or not the problem is hardware or software related.
ALSO
you can check the Event Viewer via Start > Run > eventvwr.msc
look under system & also applications for red X errors relating to a shutdown time.
post full error messages including Source & Event ID
ok this is what i got when iwent into eventvwr.msc i hope i did this right
but from what i see DCOM & remote acess seems to be the problem and if i keep getting those (7 in one day) then thats probably where the problem is but what are they???
Are you getting an error message before the computer restarts like either of these?

if you click on an error line it will open a details box.Originally Posted by dronestar
it is important to get the Source & Event ID# in the upper right section as well as a description of error.
you can trace on your own from this site:
http://www.eventid.net/search.asp
or post back & we can try to trace.
bear it just restarts no error messages
jephree will be trying your idea next
and thanks for your help
ok i got what your looking for jephree
this first one is the one that i have gotten sometimes as many 50+ a day
source DCOM; Event ID:10003
the site you sent me to seems to say that it lacks sufficient DCOM permissions.
but the only one that Ive seen that is doing an actual rebooot is
Source:Savedump; Event ID: 1001
both are for bugchecks it seems, but the DCOM one while not rebooting system seems to want to but unable to and the savedump is when it actually works
if i got that right
but I forgot to mention this is not a everyday occurence and there seems to be no reason that it happens that Ive been able to reproduce
but the times it seems to happen the most is when iam on the internet and looking at a couple of different site or screens but it has also happened offline
while i was playing a game. (dungeon siege)
So now whats the next step cause you got me going into new things that ive not delt with before which is really cool because i love this stuff
again thx's for your help
Do you see where the save dump file is?
Something like: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini121304-05.dmp.
From your Start Menu you can Search for Minidump.
Can you open the latest of these files?
Also:
Did you see a list similar to this under the savedump entries?
- Bugcheck code: 0x4000008A -
- Bugcheck code: 0x0000000a -
- Bugcheck code: 0x0000001e -
And:
DCOM; Event ID:10003

ok sorry havn't responded quicker
but yes i can open latest minidump file, opened with notepad and al it it had was page writtin a bunch of times and some other gooblygook. As for the bugcheck codes what you put was exactly what i get. Also what you put for the DCOM from what i get out of that i might be missing a dll or a file and was wondering if in removeing spyware if i might of accidently removed something i need. Should i run windows back through and see if that fixes it or is there something else i should do.
As to the gooblygook; Microsoft has a program (very large) that translates this.
If you are interest let me know & I will point the way.
The other things I see range from:
Do you have the latest Service Pack?
Perhaps a conflict with your AntiVirus?
Perhaps a problem with your video card?
Are you still experiencing these shut downs?
Of course a repair option is always there:
