    Win98 SE

For whatever reason when I try and shut down my computer using the OS Win98 SE it comes up with a series of not responding programs windows that require me to shut them down before I can successfully shut my computer down, whats the problem? I have downloaded the patch that lets Win98 SE shut down properly but these not responding programs still continue to pop up. What can I do to stop this?

Could be that it's having problems loading and unloading device drivers. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, then go to the Device Manager tab. Are there any entries with a warning symbol (an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle I think) next to them?

How much memory (RAM) is in the PC?

Try running Scandisk on all hard drives in the PC. If it finds errors and fixes them, run it again and again until it doesn't find any errors.

If there's no problems in Device Manager and Scandisk seems OK each time, let us know. Then download HiJackThis from http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html, install it into its own directory on the C:\ drive and run it. Create a log file and copy and paste the contents into a reply here.

P.S. Do you have any anti-virus software running? If so, update it using the built-in online update facility, then run a full virus scan.

If you don't have any anti-virus software, you should get some!

Its seems to have fixed itself, but now there is a different problem, when the computer boots up, just before the desktop appears, there is a black screen with a flashing white cursor in the top left corner, and it stays there for about 2-3 minutes then boots up, what could be causing this?

Sounds like it's having problems loading device drivers. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, then go to the Device Manager tab. Are there any entries with a warning symbol (an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle I think) next to them?

Alternatively, it might be running something wierd that's taking a long time. Go into Windows Explorer, browse to your C:\ drive, right-click on the Autoexec.bat file and then select Edit from the context menu. Copy and paste the contents of the Autoexec.bat file into a reply here so we can see what it's trying to load up each time you switch the PC on. If you can't see the Autoexec.bat file, you need to switch on hidden and system files (go to the options screen, accessible from the View menu in Windows Explorer).

I have absolutely no idea - what's the "entirely right" version of the message?!
