And at same time I get "mdm.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

Furthermore, I can connect to net, but IE 6.0 comes up with blank windows. Can't run my McAfee AV program. Sometimes won't boot at all due to system files "missing". Any help out there?

Are you sure of the version of Internet Explorer? It's not actually V4.0 by chance is it? Click on 'Help' - top menu bar of IE, and click 'About'

nb: Mdm.exe is the Machine Debug Manager

Sorry - (when I go to IE, click Help, About the box comes up blank - in fact all IE windows come up blank). System Information says my version of IE is 5.50.4134.0600IC, and is 56 bit cypher.

Personally I'd download and install IE6 again. IE6 SP1:
