    'Updating Configuration Files'

Every time I switch on my laptop now, I am greeted by the message 'Updating Configuration Files - please wait - this may take several minutes'. Dead right - it usually takes at least ten, but then Windows ME boots up as per usual with no trouble. I haven't any idea why this should happen, as I'm not installing new programs or anything.

It's a great nuisance, as I use the laptop for taking notes in libraries, and it means that I can't start work until at least ten or fifteen minutes after I arrive. Can anyone help, please? I use Spybot, AOL's spyware utility and AVG religiously each night before logging off, so my system should be pretty clean.

    Thanks in advance

Here are some posts I see:

    1) Look for a file named wininit.ini (not winint.exe) and rename it
    wininit.old. Reboot.
If still having a problem then continue this search on google.com

"Setup is updating your configuration files"

    2) Look for the file WININIT.BAK - it's the just-used WININIT.INI file which is
what instructs wininit.exe on what to do when booting, and causes the
    'Updating...' message to appear.
Open it in Notepad, and it should give you some idea of what was going on.

2a) Interestingly, it's the same list that SpyBot killed on the run before I shut
    the system down.
2b) That's quite normal - you should always reboot immediately after running
Spybot (or Ad-Aware) for just this reason.
