    Angry Power Issue... HELP!!!

i have an ongoing problem. i have a 7 year old ADC Spectrum 9 Glrs computer with windows 98 that shuts off on its own during any type of task i am doing. i cant turn the computer back on for about 20 mins each time. occassionaly, it will go for a week without shutting off once. i am 100% positive that it is not because of any setting that i have. i check the settings all the time and they are always what i left them on. there isnt any hibernation mode or anything like that. its getting me very mad though. what can i do? i will post my jicak log after the next problem...

i have a smart and friendly cd racer drive that makes horrible, horrible engine reving noises when it is closed. it won't let me copy any cds with the software and it makes the computer make other noises, as well. i have tried removing the program for the cd, but the noises are still there. how do i remove this drive and make the noises stop??? please help.

    help...help...help!!!

Is it your cpu getting a bit hot and causing it to shut down ?? as you say after about 20 mins it fires up again so it may be heat related.

That's an exceptionally clean HiJack This log, Rauschit

    I'm assuming that

    O4 - Startup: Webshots.lnk = C:\Program Files\Webshots\WebshotsTray.exe

is some kind of Internet photo / picture thing that you use? Looks like there's an icon for it in your System Tray down by the clock.

Brain_damage has a good point. Maybe it's that your system is shutting down after a long time if you're only using it very lightly but it shuts down after a short time if you're making it work hard on games, etc? That could certainly be a CPU overheating type of issue.

Remove the panels on the system case so that you can see the insides. Switch it on and check that the CPU fan is spinning freely and isn't clogged up with a load of dust. Don't touch anything whilst it's running and don't blow into the case to move any dust - dust should always be sucked out with a vacuum cleaner or brushed out with a clean paintbrush, never just blown around onto other components!

If this doesn't seem to be the cause, then a failing power supply unit (PSU) could also demonstrate similar symptoms. It might possibly also explain why your CD drive is playing up.
