I recently reinstalled win98 on my old PC. Everything seems fine except that there's no sound in windows media player. There is sound when windows boots and other times, just not for wmp. I've checked under device manager and all seems well regarding the "VIA PCI audio controller" and the driver seems to be installed OK.
Anybody have any suggestions?

You might try this :

Go Start > Run and type DXDIAG. Run through the Audio Troubleshooting tests.

Also perhaps consider reinstalling DirectX - From this link here :
