    Programs Not responding

I have Win98se installed on my laptop, Toshiba Satellite2140CDS, 160MG RAM, 4 gig space. I have just installed an external sound card in order to record tracks onto my hard drive and have not been able to run many programs properly. I cannot access the control Panel without the computer freezing, I get 'Rundll32 not responding' messages and 'mgsk32' or sthg similar to that not responding as well.
I checked a previous forum and they asked to run Hijackthis and copy paste the log into a forum, so I did that. Please see log below. I also was not able to run the sound card at all, It's not even present in my audio settings even though it is present in device manager under soundcards etc. The only sound card present in audio settings is my internal one. Also, I bought a new set of speakers for my laptop and one of them is not working, could that be related to a virus? I thought maybe it was a balance setting issue but I cannot access the settings for audio due to problem above.
I also ran Error Nuker and it found errors in many applications, what should I do? PLEASE HELP! This is a copy of the log.

Claire, you've got some spyware or other such problems on there that you need to get rid of.

Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items and click Fix:

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDUPDATES\WINUPDT.EXE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDUPDATES\WINKA.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDUPDATES\WINUPDT.EXE

You've also got quite a few non-standard toolbars for Internet Explorer by the looks of it. Toolbars often house spyware and other problems. If you didn't realise that you had extra toolbars running, then also put checks next to:

    C:\PROGRAM FILES\HOTBAR\BIN\HBINST.EXE

    O2 - BHO: TBShower Class - {2AF8CED6-5BD8-4310-A90C-9664EFB16B10} - C:\WINDOWS\SYAS\COOLBAR\GLOBAL~1\COOLBAR.DLL

    O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Cool Bar - {A49AA76F-7215-4F80-97D6-9A7E16A5FEE1} - C:\WINDOWS\SYAS\COOLBAR\GLOBAL~1\COOLBAR.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: &SearchBar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWAY\MYBAR\2.BIN\MYBAR.DLL
    O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Hotbar] C:\PROGRAM FILES\HOTBAR\BIN\HBINST.EXE /Upgrade
    O8 - Extra context menu item: &Google Search - res://C:\PROGRAM FILES\GOOGLE\GOOGLETOOLBAR1.DLL/cmsearch.html

    O8 - Extra context menu item: Backward &Links - res://C:\PROGRAM FILES\GOOGLE\GOOGLETOOLBAR1.DLL/cmbacklinks.html
    O8 - Extra context menu item: Translate into English - res://C:\PROGRAM FILES\GOOGLE\GOOGLETOOLBAR1.DLL/cmtrans.html

I'm also suspicious of this one, which is a Windows Address Book Control, i.e. the kind of thing that spyware or a virus might want to use to gain information about your contacts and to send junk mail to them pretending to be you:

    O16 - DPF: {FA9740A2-5802-42E2-B509-81186EEB3C42} (WABControl Class) - https://www.linkedin.com/cab/wabctrl.cab

Once you've cleared those, create a fresh HiJackThis log and post it up so that we can see if that's helped. Note that the first thing I mentioned (WindUpdates) seems to be very difficult to get rid of, judging by what I've read in other forums.

Also, when your new HJT log is posted, I might have to move the thread to the Security section of D-A-L.com - the guys in there are more experienced with these kinds of issues.

Reboot into Safe Mode (keep pressing F8 as soon as the black POST screen lists your hard drive and CD/DVD drive), then select the Safe Mode option.

In Windows Explorer, go into C:\Program Files and delete the Windupdates directory. If you can't see it, switch on Hidden And System Files by going to the Options screen (on the View or Tools menu I think).

Reboot and post a fresh HiJackThis log.

If that hasn't helped, I'll hand you over to the Security guys but they're a bit stretched at the moment so it might be quicker if I can help you out in the Windows 98 section of D-A-L.com.

    Thanks

I deleted the windupdates directory and this is the new log. I think it worked, I don't see it in the log. There was another directory under program files titled 'Windowsupdates' that I didn't delete. Should I have deleted it too?

Please let me know what to do next as far as the results I got from Error nuker program and sound card issues if possible. I am looking forward to having my system operate normally for a change...

    Thank you for your time

Please see previous message for the updated log.

I wanted to mention a few new things that have happened since the new log. I unistalled my ex sound card and re-installed it. Tried to go in teh audi settings in control panel/multimedia but couldn't, this is what happened:

1- Control Panel (not responding) so I end task and tried again then
2- Msgsrv32 (not responding) so I end task, unistalled MSN Messenger, reboot and tried again.
3- Couldn't open Multimedia and gave a message Rundll32 (not responding), rebooted and tried to connect to the internet
4- Enternet (not responding) so I end task and rebooted...and now I am writing you this message.

I get the feeling that this ex sound card (MAYA EX 5.1) from Audiotrak that I am trying to get it working is messin up something somewhere...I don't know what to do with this issue. i would like to get it to work or detrmine what the problem is so I can make a decision on whether I need to send it abck and get reiumbursed or not. I know there's a limited time for reiumbursement...

    Thanks

"C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate" is a legitimate folder that should not be removed.

You've still got one last bit of the WindUpdates problem there:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindUpdates] C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDUPDATES\WINUPDT.EXE

It shouldn't actually be causing any harm because you've removed the folder that contained the file that it's trying to run. However, it would be worth marking that entry to be fixed in HiJackThis anyway.

I'm pretty sure that the errors that you've now got are nothing to do with the tidy-up that we've done. Nothing that we deleted would have any impact on those areas.

When you un-installed the sound card files and MSN Messenger, did it ask you if you wanted to remove some shared files? If the un-install routines removed shared files that Windows still needs (such as Run32DLL), then it could have pretty dramatic effects, such as those that you've seen

Having said that though, re-installing the sound card drivers should have replaced the same files that it removed. Might be worth un-installing it again, check the manufacturer's web site for the latest version of the sound card drivers and then install the newest available copy.

Might also be worth re-installing MSN Messenger (I'm not quite sure why you removed that as it shouldn't have been doing any harm). Incidentally, MSN Messenger gets updated frequently so there's probably a newer version of that available now as well.

I'm presuming that, as you've got Windows 98, you don't have restricted permissions and a separate 'Administrator' login or something?

Oh right, I've just read your original post again - sorry, we help out with so many different people's problems every day that it's easy to forget how everyone's thread started .... even though yours was just a few hours ago!

The 4 problems that you listed at 5.51pm, are they the same issues that you were talking of at lunchtime?

Yes they are the same problems in both replies. I did uninstall and re-install the sound card again. i did already go to the manufacturer's website for the latest driver download and I checked the one I have is V3.05 and the one on the website is 3.01. I am assuming taht the one I have is teh latest version right, teh v3.05?

Anyway, I did install the driver from the website and installed teh sound card and I am still having the same problem.

In answer to your question about deleting shared files, i did not remove anything u didn't me ask me to remove. So no worries there...

Any other ideas about what's causing teh sound card not to be listed in the audio settings? the manufacturer's website support asked me to disable my internal card and see if the USB external card would then be recognised but that didn't do anything, I tried it.

here's teh latest log. i couldn't see the file you wanted me to fix in the list.

I have known software developers to get their version numbers rather messed up but you're right in saying that v3.05 ought to be newer than v3.01. If v3.01 is the latest on the web site, that should still be pretty recent.

Erm ..... nothing at the moment but I'll carry on thinking about it. When you disabled the internal sound card, did you disable it in the BIOS? If you just disabled it in Device Manager, it would be worth restarting, going into the BIOS and seeing if you can disable it in there as well. I've never had any reason to use an external sound card so I don't really understand how they work to be honest but a conflict with your internal sound card would make sense.

No, you're right. It was there in your log that you created at 11.25 but it's not there now
