I have set up a donated PC for a school for people with disabilities with W2000 as it allows the Administrator to restrict access to the "Critical" parts of the PC from unwanted little fingers. I have connected a USB Scanner which works fine when the Administrator is logged in but when other users (who are designated "Restricted Users") open the lid it triggers the capture programme but then says "No scanner Connected". It clearly is as it has triggered the message. Any ideas?

When you installed the scanner software you should have had the option to install for all users of this computer or only me. If you were logged into the admin account and chose only me that's the reason the limited user accounts aren't able to access the scanner software. You may want to log onto the limited account and install the software or uninstall the software and reinstall from the admin account being sure to select anyone who uses this computer.

Thanks Bear - I thought I had done that but will go back, uninstall the software and start again. I'll keep you posted on the result. Many thanks.

Still the same problem - must be the very old software I suspect - nothing newer on the Mustek site. However I have sort of solved the problem by giving the users Admin priviledges but using Group Policies to lock out most of the sensitive issues - learning all the time!

Not yet - that's the next "project" when we manage to scrounge one. This exercise would have been much easier with all up to date kit - however beggers cannot be choosers!
