Trying to be helpful, I downloaded an art programme onto my wife's PC (running Windows 98). When it now boots (in Safe Mode) it says a device file has been removed and if this was done deliberately then uninstall the programme that has caused the problem, I went to the Uninstall bit on Settings but the said programmes are not listed. Any helpful ideas to prevent a divorce?

Try running the setup file for the art program again. Often this will detect that the software is already installed and then give you the option to remove it.

Failing that, locate the directory that has been installed into. It will probably be in C:\Program Files\Software company name\Software program name. See if there's a program named something like "setup" or "uninstall" or "remove" in there and, if you find one, try running it.

I finally tracked the rogue file to an entry in win.ini - deleted this and can now load Win 98 normally. The program was so old that it did not interfere with the registry and so a deletion from the HDD was all that was necessary. Needless to say, a program that old did not have an install shield.
