2 or 16 colors
I recently helped a friend reload Windows 98 se on his computer and the color seemed all messed up. I checked the display settings and it only gives a choice of 2 or 16 colors. I read in the other posts that this is due to the video driver missing. Here is his make and model of computer
Avado model# ece3108
I hope you can help
Thanks

You need to download Aida32 from my signature, install and run it. Under computer /summary in aida you will find display and it will tell you what video adapter its got. Post back result.

For what ever reason I couldn't download that aida it came back with incorrect command perameter. but I was able to download Everast Home additiona. It looks like it does that same thing and it has a computer summary and shows a video adapter. I hope that is ok???
I have to get my friend the instructions and guild him through it. Bear with me
Thanks

Under the video adapter it says Standard PCI Graphics adapter. and is using the driver vga.drv
I'm not sure if this is relevant but under monitor it says KDS Visual sensation VS-4D (813381028069)
And under PCI/AGP Video it says SIS intigrated Video.
I hope this helps.

You're PC hasn't been given (or doesn't remember being given) the correct driver files for your graphics card. Therefore, it's just using the built-in standard VGA driver. The VGA driver only supports 640x480 pixels and 16 colours.
You need to obtain the latest driver files for your SiS graphics chip. Note that you don't actually have a separate graphics card in your PC. The graphics chip is "on-board", which means that it's built into the motherboard (you'll notice that the monitor connector on the back of the PC is in a bank of on-board sockets along with the keyboard, mouse, etc., rather than being in one of the slots towards the base of the PC).
In order to determine which driver files to get, you must first confirm exactly what graphics chip model you've got. It will be something like "SiS 620 on-board 4Mb AGP graphics controller v1.7". Running Aida32 should hopefully give you that precise information.
Alternatively, you might be lucky if you run Windows Update which will looks for driver updates as well as those important security fixes for Windows.

I was unable to run the aida32 and it came back with incorrect command peramater. So I used the Everast Home edition. It looks like it did the same thing. any other way to get the exact graphis chip model?

I got some more info that hopefully helps. Mother board chip set is sis5597 and beside the mother board name it says asvs sp97-v (3isa,4pci,4simm,video)
I hope this helps out , My friend is coming into town tomorrow so maybe I'll get him to bring in his computer too.
I appreciate your patience and time.
Thanks

This still didn't work and now the machine is booting in safe mode. I can get it to come up in normal mode and I see that there is now 256 colors but when I try to change it makes me reboot and then it comes up in safe mode again as 16 colors. I get a hardware not compatible sort of error. After I install that driver it changed the "video adapter field on the Everast Home addition report also. it is now saying sis5597/98.
Any help is appreciated

Just wanted to give you guys an update. It looked like ther might have been something wrong with that download. The machine would freeze up when ever I would try and go to the command line . Even when I had enough and tried to once again rebuild the computer. All the drives were crewed up as well and I had to re partition when reloading windowss 98. Did I merntion that he was on dial-up.....so it took for ever!!!! Anyways once I got past that I went to he manufaturer of the motherboard. (Asus sp97-v) and downloaded the driver from there and it worked with no problem. So thanks you guys for your help!!! My additional troubles just came from that initial driver download.
Beware of downloads.....there is alot of crap out there.
thank again
