    PC upgrade

Decided to upgrade my PC with new mobo, processor and memory.
Bought Asrock P4S61 mb, Celeron 330 2.66Ghz 533Mhz processor and 512 Mb PC333 DDR RAM.
Put it all together and installed in case with existing HDD having 98SE on it.
Switched on and it boots up until it gets to the screen with the windows pic where after about 2 secsthe screen goes blank. The drive seems to be doing something but I can't see anything of course.
Reading some of the other posts on here I may have to re-install windows. Can anyone confirm this please? I am a bit reluctant to do this as I did it on my other PC with XP and lost a load of files which fortunately I eventually recovered.

    Thanks Malc

Whenever you change the motherboard in a PC, you usually have to format the hard drive and start again. Changing a processor should have no impact as it has no drivers that change. Changing the memory should have no impact as it has no drivers that change. However, motherboards have LOADS of driver files (most are automatically installed by Windows so you don't even realise).

When you re-fit your old hard disk, your PC will try to boot up and your Windows 98SE installation will load up all of the drivers for your old motherboard .......... resulting in total confusion and, often, a blank screen !

Thanks I was afraid of that. I was hoping to avoid copying all my files.

if you have partitioned your drive you can just format certain drives, for instance on my pc i have all my work on D:\ so when i format i just format the system drive ( C:\ ) so i dont lose anything . .

    Drive not partitioned unfortunately

If I was to get another drive as master, install windows on it and use my present drive as the slave would the two windows conflict or could I just uninstall windows on the slave drive and keep all my data intact?

Yes, a second hard drive will allow you to copy data over. Set up the new hard drive as the primary master and the old hard drive as the slave. Install your preferred version of Windows on the new master drive (as long as it's Windows 98 or later) and then, once it's installed, you'll see both drives appearing as available partitions in Windows Explorer.

The two versions of Windows will not conflict - only the one on the new master drive will be used.
