What's the difference between the two?
1. Pentium 4E 3.2 1MB S478 800FSB Box
2. Pentium4 540 1MB S0cket775 800FSB Box
I tried looking them up on the Intel site, but got lost amidst all the jargon. Both are approximately the same price (~149 quid on dabs.com)
And is it worth even looking at Pentiums or should I be looking at reasonably priced Athlon 64s from now on?
Thanks.

Both are the same speed - 3.2GHz, 1Mb cache, 800MHz Front Side Bus (FSB). The Pentium 4 540 is from the new range that doesn't include the speed rating in the name. Note that it uses a new socket so you'll need one of the latest motherboards that has this socket on it.
That's why Dabs are still selling the "old" one as well.
I'm an Intel guy through and through and wouldn't be interested in an AMD, even if it was 64-bit. By contrast, many people here love Athlons and wouldn't spend their hard-earned cash on a Pentium 4. The choice is really yours. Bear in mind when comparing different processors, though, that the different brands and model ranges all seem to use different methods of rating the speeds now so they're not so easy to compare any more - best to read reviews where they do benchmark tests - try www.computerbuyer.co.uk for more info
