    Motherboard/Memory Stick Question!

As in the other thread, im planning to buy a new memory stick (actually 2 or if you guys can help me solve this).
Ok, Tuneup Utilities 2004 says my 'mainboard' is P4X266-8233. So question #1, is that the same as VIA P4X266/266A? My motherboard manuel says P4XFA/P4MFA (Jetway). Im assuming they are all typically the same.
I ran a motherboard compatibility check and it said this
    ------------------
    Jetway P4XFA
    Chipset VIA Apollo P4X266A
Module Board 4 or 6 Layer Board
    CAS Latency All Cas Options
DRAM Brands OEM or Mid Level or Major Brand Chips
    DRAM Types 16x8, 32x8, 32x4, 64x4, 16x16 DRAM Chips Only

So im assuming they are the same.

2nd question, Im trying to buy a OEM card, save some money and im cheap. So I stumble on those these huge bold letters. (This is for a 512 DDR memory stick, not a 256)

(High Density) ONLY FOR SYSTEMS THAT CAN READ 1.5GB OR MORE TOTAL SYSTEM MEMORY - BECAUSE OF THE MEMORY DENSITY THIS MEMORY WILL NOT WORK ON PENTIUM II OR PENTIUM III MOTHERBOARDS BUILT WITH INTEL BRAND CHIPSETS - PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM UNLESS YOU HAVE FIRST CONFIRMED THAT YOUR SYSTEM CAN READ A 1.5GB (1500MB) TOTAL SYSTEM MEMORY OR MORE

Ok Im not completely sure but im running on celeron 1.7ghz. And my mobo is Jetway P4XFA Chipset VIA Apollo P4X266A. Is that compatable? Thanks guys

Ah crap, sorry for making 2 threads but I didnt realize how much this is related to the memorystick over the mobo..

Just retrieved this info about your motherboard from Jetway's web site (www.jetway.com.tw):

Support Socket 478B processor for Intel PentiumÒ 4 (mPGA478) package processor ,Support 400/533MHz(P4XFA) ,400MHz (P4MFA) System Bus Frequency

    VIA P4X266A(P4XFA)/P4M266 (P4MFA) and VIA8233A chipset

Support 168-pin SDRAM DIMM and 184-pin DDR DIMM (Can't Use DIMM And DDR SDRAM memory Together)

I've tried to download the manual to see what the total memory capacity is but Taiwan's Internet connection to the rest of the world is absolutely awful and, even though the manual is only 800Kb, it's taking forever to get here. If you've got a printed copy, it will tell you in there. Alternatively, you could try and download it later from http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/download/mindex.htm

And, in terms of memory types and capacities, it's likely that those different motherboards are all similar.

As you've got a Pentium4-based Celeron, I believe that you'll need DDR RAM, rather than PC133 SDRAM.

how do i check if i have a high density or low denisty mobo?
thanks. ya i do have a p4-based celeron. and im currently using that black slot occupied with 256mb memory. i cant just take that out and stick in a 512mb sdram?

Oh OK, my apologies - if your motherboard is currently fitted with 256Mb memory in the black slot, then that is PC133 SDRAM - please ignore the last line of my previous post when I suggested that you probably need DDR RAM.

You are correct in saying that you could take out your existing 256Mb PC133 SDRAM and replace it with 512Mb PC133 SDRAM.

Alternatively, with regards to determining whether that DDR RAM that you found would be suitable (and assuming that what it says about your motherboard having to support more than 1.5Gb RAM is correct), then you can find this out from your motherboard manual. It will refer to the maximum amount of memory that can be fitted - it will call it something like "Max supported RAM" or "Maximum installable memory" or something like that. It should be listed in the technical specifications section of the manual.

Please let us know if that helps

Yes you are EXTREMELY helpful. Here is what i got from my manual

    Memory Socket-
168-pin SDR SDRAM module socket x1 and 184-pin ddr modual socket x2
Supports 1 pcs PC133/PC100 SDRAM Module expandable to 1.0 GB, or 2 pces DDR266/DDR200 DDR Modules Expandable to 2.0GB

    2-4 Install Memory
This motherboard provides two 184-pin DDR Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMM) sites for DDR memory expansion available from minimum memory size of 64 MB to maximimum memory size of 2.0 GB SDR SDRAM or one 168-pin SDR DIMM sites for SDRAM memory for maximum meory size of 1.0GB

What OS ya got? W98 cannot see more than 256 and XP doesn't benefit really over 756.

Also I'd be wary over what you can fit and what your memory controller can handle.
