    A stupid NooB question!

Hi guys, I'm building my first PC and the Gigabtye motherboard I've bought is advertised as "ATA133" ready but the hard drive I want uses a ATA100 interface. Is the motherboard downward compatible or do I have a problem?

    should be compatable , Yes.

    should not be a problem.

to be certain you might check the specs on mobo, but i've never seen such a problem at these speeds.

Yeah I checked all the information I have on my motherboard and nowhere does it mention being ATA100 compatible...

Might email Gigabyte. If not I think I'll just risk it!

Do you know if the cables are different for ATA100/133?

    Thanks jephree

Don't worry - it's definitely backwards-compatible. Gigabyte make some fantastic motherboards

I'm not entirely sure about the cables to be honest. As far as I know, cables with blue connectors are ATA66/100 and cables with red connectors are ATA133/150. In any case, though, you'll be fine with either type if you're running an ATA100 hard disk (the cables will also be backwards-compatible).

    Good luck with your build
