    Post Static Electricity

[FONT=Verdana]I have placed an order for all my PC parts for my first build, parts should be here by Thursday (from ebuyer).

Basically, i am confident that i can build this and at the moment i dont think i need any advice on that, the only thing that i cant help thinking about is this static electricity business.

I have read in various places that it is best to install the CPU and Memory onto the MB before putting it into the case. I will most probably do this, however, where is the best place to place the motherboard whilst i am installing this stuff, without risking static damage? can i place it directly onto a wooden table and install everything there? or will i need to build it on the actual anti-static bag that comes with the pack?

Please could an experience builder advice me on this very simple situation.

One other thing, where is the best place to clip the 'crocodile clip' of my anti static wrist strap onto? does this mean i can directly touch chips without any static damage?

    Thanks.

    Hi Jummah, Welcome to D-A-L

Its not basic, its a good question.

Always keep components such as the motherboard in there sealed anti static bags until you need to use them. make sure you wear the strap for extra protection but also just touch the inside of the metal casing before handling components which will make doubly sure you don't transfer any static to the component.

Never build on or near carpet, a tables fine just keep your hands clean and watch the sharper cases..you will get niggly cuts off some cases. Basically just be carefull, when things don't fit..don't force them just take a step back and try again. Force WILL damage certain compionents.

Feel free to post back if you want more info or help.

Thanks a lot for your fast and relevent reply, b.t.w. i think the layout of this site is excellent and it looks great.

One last question: so if i just placed my motherboard directly onto my wooden (coated in plastic laminate) table, then installed the CPU and Memory onto the board whilst the MB is on the table, the motherboard wont be affected by any static electricity. is that correct?

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

I wouldn't place it directly onto the table as it is hard, the motherboard (mobo) should have a thin piece of foam in its packaging about the same size as the mobo, rest the mobo on this instead to protect it.

thanks again, im assuming that resting it on the foam wont generate any static electricity. (please correct me if im wrong)

    Thanks, for the advice.

You are correct The mobo is sat on the foam for protection during shipping so it's perfectly safe.

but isnt the Mobo shipped inside an anti-static bag, which is placed on the foam, instead of directly placing the mobo onto the foam with no anti-static bag.

Place the foam on the table then the anti static bag on the foam and the mobo on the bag The reason I said put it on the foam was because pushing down on a mobo on hard would is not a good idea...you might damage it.
