As an associate of D-A-L's (and someone he looks up to, lol ), I'll back up everything he's said. Perfect advice.

Personally, my preferred system building location is outside on the patio - you get NO static out there at all !! However, when it's dark and raining, that's perhaps not so practical.

I've set up my "dining room" as my office and I use a big wooden desk on wooden laminate flooring. D-A-L's right - try to keep clear of carpet.

If I have to do any on-site work at a customer's house, I always try to use a wooden kitchen table if possible.

Looks like you've got the right ideas - good luck with your build

Once you have your PSU fitted into the case and plugged in <NOT switched on>, you have your case as a pretty good Earth Point.

Although the human body (sheep excel sapiens here) can store a charge of several thousand volts - and you'll know you are when you earth yourself - in 99.9 percent of cases, merely holding onto the case with moistened fingers for a few seconds every minute or so is enough.

If however you hear a loud crack - see a spark or jump in pain when you touch the case, then your a static bomb for the moment and I would advise not even attempting to do electronic work even with a wrist tie.

As a rule of thumb, try not to touch the connector pins/strips or components if at all possible.

If you have nylon shirts thick rubber mats and a herd of sheep in a dry atmosphere it may well be advisable to keep hold of the case and get a friend to substitute the missing hand, whilst holding onto you with the other.... visions of golden geese eggs
