    swapping towers over

Hi, i've just bought a new tower with Windows7 and i need to swap it with my old XP one, is it easy to do please? I've saved all my documents etc and am ready to format the old one for my nephew but i'm a little cautious as i've never done this before, i usually have help.
Is it as simple as i think it is? LOL

    Just to clarify:

You bought a new PC with Windows 7 installed?

You have backed up your My Documents from the old XP computer and wish to transfer them to the Windows 7 computer?

Then you wish to Clean Install XP on the old computer?

    Is this correct?

Not quite - i bought a tower only as i'd only just bought a new keyboard, mouse, speakers etc, all i have to do is swap them over. So do i take all the leads out, remove the old tower, replace it with the new one and put the leads back in. Is it that easy or do i have to do something with the wireless router and laptop?
I've never done it before but it sounds too easy so i don't want to try in case i mess it all up. Should have more faith in myself but i don't, although i fix it when it goes wrong now and don't have to call a tech guy out, so i've learnt something. <g>

I don't have a problem with formatting the old one etc and i don't have a problem reinstalling all my programmes it's just the tower swap/router i'm cautious about.

    Thanks for clarifying.

It should be as easy as you say.

The turn-over should have no affect on your router settings.

If a problem arises just revert to the current setup and let us know.

Well i tried today and nothing seems to work. I cannot get keyboard, monitor, mouse to do anything. The router seems okay as i'm on my laptop, the external drives work okay...but the monitor light comes on, yet nothing at all.
Checked all connections are no problems but although the tower eventually comes on...it's as dead and a dodo really. Nothing seems to be going from the tower to the monitor etc.... :*(

Disconnect everything except the keyboard and mouse and monitor then turn it on.

Do the case fans start up? Do your hear a Beep?

Does the monitor get a green light?

Does the monitor show: "No Signal Input"?

Can't do that tonight, everything is down on the floor and i've been at this for 12 hours now.:*(

Can't say as i can hear anything although the light comes on the front of the tower

Does the monitor get a green light?

yes but it goes to orange

Does the monitor show: "No Signal Input"?

    Yes

Got a wireless keyboard which is dead too..the mouse lights up, the usb thingy lights up but the keyboard - nothing. All have new batteries and i've pressed the little switches time and time again as it says in the book, but nothing.
Tried an ordinary keyboard and mouse but the same thing happened....absolutely nothing.

Well the monitor is indicating that it is doing what it should be doing.

When you power on you should get one beep indicating the BIOS has been engaged.

If the fans run and you do not hear a beep my next step would be to open it up and start re-seating the RAM and graphics card etc.

However if this is a brand new computer I'd suggest returning it especially if it is a local retailer. See if they can start it up.

No i get a crackling noise like a short circuit.

I reseated the Ram but I can't see the graphics card, where should i be looking? Do you think they forgot it? LOL

I phoned them today and they said that might be the best idea but i nearly got it going. Windows7 floated by for a second or two then it went. I'd rather see if there are any more suggestions from you before i call to get them to take it back. I swapped the surge protector for a new one and checked all the plugs etc.

The graphics might be on the motherboard. Integrated.

With unusual noises and as it is new I'd recommend returning it.

A new computer should work flawlessly.
