Ok I didn't know that. Compaq is HP. I found the serial number and all so now what?

You can use their web site to find the system specs and potential BIOS downloads or if you want help doing so you can post your serial number etc.

Yes. Just make sure you have the exact computer model e.g. Compaq Presario 5330US.

Check your current version and see if there is an update.

What if I messed up? what's the backup plan? cuz if i messed up then I don't think I could start at all... that would be horrible.
