1000 is medium? Not hardly. You need to hire a consultant.
Good idea. I do have a comment. If you are going to have servers strictly to provide internet & intranet connectivity then you really don't need routers since you can just use switches. In fact using routers as well probably wouldn't be a good idea. If you need wireless then use access points. But since we aren't there it is nearly impossible for us to tell you what you need for such a large network.

Huh? On a 1000 node network? I would surely have a router - a real router, not a home network device. You can have switches too, but I see no reason routers would be a bad idea when dealing with corporate networks of this scale.In fact using routers as well probably wouldn't be a good idea.
