Question PC upgrading confusion-where to start

    Hello DAL peoples,

I have a 06' Presario 6000' and I recently decided I would attempt to upgrade it so I can run some decent games and its RAM is just not cutting it anymore. Money is tight so I can't afford a new PC at the time. But I'm confused because my if I want to upgrade video card then I have to upgrade my CPU because it doesn't have enough GHz (1.80). Is it worth the trouble, or should I just suck it up and head down to rent-a-center (last resort) Just add ram or?.......

But if I was to upgrade what would you guys recommend? I read another post and went head and ran the scan tool. '= )

Sample template for the DAL Scanner

    Much appreciated thx,
    dnk

    This should be your PC:

    Compaq Presario 6435CL Desktop PC

    Specs:

    Product Specifications

You can double your RAM from 512MB to 1GB which is the board max.

You can add an AGP 4x graphics card.

You are very limited by that 200 Watt PSU.

This would also affect any CPU upgrade.

What games do you want to play? What is your budget?

My budget is around $200-300, at the mooment to spen towards my PC.

I have tried many, of many games to see what I can run (can u run it only has the newer games). Here are some games I have tried that will and won't work.

    Will work:
    AOE2
Sims1 (no expansions, extra content lags up my gameplay)
    Worms:Armageddon

    Won't work:
    Company of hero's (series)
    Sims2 (series)
    AOE3
    Evil Genius
    Worms 3d (series)
Anything with 3D graphics lags terribly which really limits my choice.

    I will add 512mb

As for the PSU/CPU/Grapgics Card, idk

These popular RAM makers have auto-scanning and/or manual entry RAM wizards to help you determine compatible RAM. For manual entry, enter/select the PC or motherboard make and model number and the wizard will list compatible RAM.
    Crucial - Memory Advisor
Corsair - Memory Configurator (manual data entry only)
GeIL - Memory Configurator (manual data entry only)
Kingston - Memory Search (manual data entry only)
    Mushkin - Advisor
OCZ - Memory Configurator (manual data entry only)
Patriot - Memory Search (manual data entry only)
PNY - Memory Configurator (manual data entry only)
SuperTalent - Memory Finder (manual data entry only)
The following retailers have auto-scanners and manual wizards. They sell brand name and/or "house" brand (re-branded) RAM.
Newegg - Memory Configurator System Tool
    MemoryStock - Upgrade Configurator
    18004Memory - Configurator
Here is Newegg's list of cards that might work for you:

    Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Video Cards & Video Devices,Desktop Graphics / Video Cards,AGP 4X/8X,

You must verify that the card will run under 200 Watts or else you will need to upgrade the PSU.

I think it would be dumb to further upgrading, except ram, after considering the cost of all the parts and just save up for a new PC. I could probably put a down payment on a good PC tomarrow with $300 or less, hopefully .

Thanks for the advice jephree, you probably saved me a butt load of cash and headaches. The effort is much appreciated

    No problem.

Today's hardware is much more advanced and also cheaper than 8 years ago.

From your AGP 4X the current standard is PCI_E 16X. The RAM and CPU speeds have also quadrupled at least.

Let us know if we can help looking for a new rig.

    ok,

I am having another issue as of (02/05)

I went to startup my PC and before the boot screen it shut it self down and made this awful wine sound, then went to boot itself back up and then off, then on, then off and so forth. I cut the power to it, and waited awhile. After about 30mins it finally booted up and searched google and had refrences to cleaning or replacing my PSU. I cracked open my PC and cleaned it, i seriously don't think it has been cleaned since 06' lol a girl owned it before I had it and you know how that goes . It like 3cm of dust caked on the fans and a metal filter looking thingy under a smaller fan inside. I took my aircompressor to it and it got it cleaned out pretty good. My PC wasn't hot it was off all night, you think it was just the dust?

Its been about 3 hours, no shut downs or problems.

Just if it was to shutdown permanently, I wouldn't be completely skrewed X_x.
