Yes. I haven't done anything. I've been out of town.

Is this drive that you cannot use internal or external?

Sorry if this was already mentioned buy I haven't reread everything.

I see a lot of errors such as yours when dealing with external drives.

This is the internal drive that I bought last month. I went ahead & removed all of my files from the drive & repartitioned it as a simple disk like several pages that I saw said. I'll see how that goes. I haven't had this problem before I started using this drive and it was working in Vista but not in XP. The really weird thing is that all of the drives are not dynamic; I don't remember if it was dynamic before. I was hoping for a solution that didn't involving moving all the files off of the drive & repartitioning it. I don't know why but I had a bad feeling about using that tool that you pointed out to me. I was hoping was in the registry like it was earlier.

I am not sure why they all would change to dynamic.

Here is a page describing the difference:

jephree everything with the new drive has been fine until the last couple of days. A couple of days ago my computer started making a sound it hadn't made before. I thought that it was a fan but yesterday I determined that it was the new drive. At the time it was making a low pitched sound that made it sound like either it is vibrating inside or it is vibrating the bays [or both, I couldn't tell which]. Thats the best way that I know how to describe it. The sound comes and goes and seems better today but I decided to delete all of the systems I installed recently and copied Vista and XP back onto the 80 gig drive basically undoing what I had done earlier. I have reformatted the 250 gig and I am currently copying my files back onto the 250 gig because I'm afraid that this new drive is heading downhill.

So I'm wondering if this sound is a bad sound or is it typical for a drive this size? Should I try to RMA the drive? I don't want to depend on this 250 because I wanted to use it to expand the room for my OSs and so I can try out windows 7. Also the 250 is almost too small for my files which is why I got the 750 gig drive. I've deleted all of the systems but vista and xp however I do have them imaged. What are your thoughts/advice?

Hard drives should not make noise.

    Run the manufacturers diagnostic.

If it comes up with errors that it cannot fix the manufacturer will replace it.

I downloaded the diagnostic software and ran the extended test and it passed. Once I finished it started that sound again.

If it were mine I would try to contact either the retailer or manufacturer.

If it is still under the retailer RMA then send it back.

Only costs you the shipping and hopefully they would replace it.

Newegg usually has no question if you got it there.

A hard drive making noise is not good.

Something mechanical is wrong and it will only get worse.

    Most manufacturers are fairly cooperative.
