A year ago when I still owned a desktop I had the same question in mind, if I should get ECC or Non-ECC and what's the difference between the two. I asked around and also searched around for information regarding it. Here's what a former frequent member of D-A-L told me:
"ECC stands for Error Correction Code. Its used in expensive professional setups usually and is slows the RAM down because of the extra work needed. Its a chip added to your RAM module with a code used to correct data errors and is recorded at the end of each sector."
So from what I could gather then, using ECC rams are pretty much redundant. I also remember reading on websites that ECC rams are more commonly used in Servers, because servers DO make use of the extra chip.
I've checked your motherboard, and apparently the most it can support is 2GB of ram. You're only using 256 and a single slot so you can definitely install another one onto it.
However, your computer only supports the older DDR1 rams, which are harder to find these days and could be quite costly. That aside, all you have to do now is to find out the frequency of your ram.
You can do that by using the link in my signature. The Memory Experts link, crucial.com.
