Can My Mother Board Handle a Pentium 4?

I have a intel 945gct m3 mother board, and i'm looking forward to change my
    intel celeron D to a pentium 4

Its a socket 775 LGA and its capable of holding a pentium4, but will it handle it?

I understand i will need a better cooling system,

    ECS 945GCT-M3 (V3.0) Mainboard

    it says
    Processor
    • LGA775 socket for latest Intel Core 2 Duo / Pentium D / Pentium 4 / Celeron D processor
    • FSB 1066/800/533 MHz
    • Support Hyper-Threading Technology < my mohter board<^ says it can handle
    i doubt it.

but i just want to make sure.. because in general.. this mother board is crap.

The board will but I am not sure that is your problem. You generally get more bang for the money by adding more RAM, and then a bigger graphics card, before upgrading the CPU. Of course, that depends on how much RAM you have to start with, and if you are still using on-board graphics or have add-on card.

On the first day, I upgraded my computer's Ram from 512 to 2.512
It can only hold a maximum of 2gigs but pushing the limits never hurts (: (sometimes) o_o

    I Recently Bought a 80$ Ati Graphics Card during the summer.| Radeon X300/X550/X1050 Series|
Sorry i gotta go b4 my mom comes in my room and rips out the internet modem peace

It seems that your RAM and your graphics are taken care of so the next step would be a processor upgrade. I would generally expect a late Pentium 4 to run better than an early Celeron D. Do you know what the speed of your Celeron D processor is?

As an example, we have just had a customer part-exchanging their Celeron D based computer against a new PC. We actually built the Celeron D computer for them 4 years ago but the motherboard was new at the time. It was an Intel Celeron D 2.4GHz processor that was originally fitted so I am expecting that we can replace that processor with a Pentium 4 processor between 2.8GHz and 3.2GHz to get significantly better performance from it before we refurbish and resell it.

Check your motherboard manual to see whether there is any limit on the speed that can be supported (the fastest Pentium 4s were a "Pentium 4 Extreme" model that went up to 3.6Ghz or 3.8GHz ... although these are rare). The motherboard can support the 533MHz Front Side Bus (FSB) speed of the later socket 775 Pentium 4 processors but the maximum overall speed may be restricted by the multiplier value that the motherboard supports.

Your system (or the motherboard at least) would appear to be more modern than the example PC that I am comparing it to. Therefore, if you already have something like a 3.2GHz Celeron D, then the advantages of upgrading to a Pentium 4 aren't very significant and you might see no real benefit. In that case, you should be looking for a Core 2 Duo processor.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks Man, This helps alot! My Celeron Runs at an Epic Failure Of 1.6ghz (:
The Celeron D is is getting harder and harder to find Espciallialy the 3.2Ghz one.
Right now I'm Aiming For this Pentium D

    Intel Pentium D 940 Processor HH80553PG0884M - 3.20GHz, 4MB Cache, 800MHz FSB, Presler, Dual-Core, OEM, Socket 775, Processor in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

But If I Fail to get 100$ Then I just might get a little boost from this Celeron as a temporary replacement

    Intel Celeron 440 Processor HH80557RG041512 - 2.0GHz, 512KB Cache, 800MHz FSB, Conroe-L, OEM, Socket 775, Processor in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

And for the cooling, I'm going to get this monster.

    Masscool 8WA741 / Socket 775 / Copper Core/Heatpipes / CPU Cooling Fan

    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...D&body=REVIEWS

But I'm Having a scary thought that it wont fit. Or something will go wrong. If you have any suggestions on a good decent sized fan that would freeze a celeron into a block of ice or run a pentium D at a nice cool temperature in the 40$ Range. Greatly apreciated (: Thanks Peace out School tomorow ):

The problem with after-market coolers is they often bang into components surrounding the CPU socket, and so will not mount on the CPU properly.

I generally prefer getting retail versions of CPUs because (1) most come with a very effective heatsink fan (HSF) assembly (guaranteed to fit the motherboard), and (2) the warranty is normally for 3 years instead of just 1.

I agree 100%. You are wasting your money if you get an old Celeron or Pentium. I recommend you just save your money until you can get the CPU the meets your needs.

Do you live in Canada? There are usually better deals around than those found at Tiger Direct.

Also, if you look at the detailed specs of the two CPUs you selected, note the D 940 Pentium consumes 130 watts of power!!! Can your power supply handle that extra load? The Celeron, on the other hand, only consumes 35 watts. Sticking with TigerDirect in Canada, the Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, with fan is more powerful than either of the two CPUs you mentioned, but consumes only 65 watts, and most likely generate much less heat, compared to the Pentium D.
Support Hyper-Threading Technology < my mohter board<^ says it can handle
    i doubt it.
Why? HT is pretty simple technology that has been around for years - I don't see why a fairly recent mobo will not support HT technology.

Whoo, -Crosses pentium D off the list-

    Yah i live in Canada

Oh i didnt mean the hyper treading, i meant the cpus and all them stuff.

gotta go for now, I might just build a totaly new computer and give this one to my mom or something

    Peace(:
