Can anyone advise me if it is possible to have sound on a computer that does not have a sound card. Can i have an external sound card via a USB port?

In the beginning, the only way to get sound, other than system beeps, was by adding a sound card - one of the easiest upgrades. And yes there are USB sound cards too, nice for laptops where the on board failed, or better quality is desired.
