thanks rokytnji, although that doesn't explain everything i know this involves the pins between the power and the IDE connector, buti i've no clue what to do with them..

I am not territorial - nor am I on-line 24/7 - if you see where something is going, or where something needs to go, please do jump in. I would only ask that if counter advice is given, it be fully justified with links so I can learn too. Forums are for open discussions.

i know this involves the pins between the power and the IDE connector,
No it doesn't, look more carefully at rokytnji's link - it does indeed explain everything.

Sadly, the jumpers are not too clear in that link but I think you can see what one is - look at the blurred picture with the tweezers. Jumpers are simply very small, less than 1/4 inch blocks that short two pins together.

The P4 connector you show is a power plug and not a jumper (a jumper simply shorts to points together). The PSU maker decided to label it P4. It means nothing other than a +12V power source for your drive.

jiminwatford, I tried googling this " Perfecta 5000 40 gig U100 ide 5400 rpm hardrive jumper diagram "and got nowhere so you are going to have to post your hardrive make and model number so I can try to pull up a diagram so Digerati can finish coaching you through this install. I am interested in what you are doing cuz I have a 160 gig ide hardrive I am thinking of adding to my IBM m-41 later. I run Linux so EULA's are irrevelant in my case. If you have the jumper diagram already on the label of your hardrive post a good picture of the jumper diagram on the label. Also turn the Hardrive so the pins are facing the camera so we can see where your existing jumper is sitting right now or if one is even in there. Whatever you do don't plug anything in or power up till you get this sorted out. You say the hardrive is already out of the broken computer so this should be easy enough to do.

Digerati is way more proficient at computer hardware than I, just as I am probably more proficient at rebuilding motorcycle engines, thats why I try not to step on any posts because I am a babe in the woods when it comes to computers and am trying to learn as I go. Don't want to give bad advice.

Ok jim, See the set of 4 rows of pins in the small segment block. That little grey plastic rectangular plug is the jumper.

..Whats a little confusing to me is your Limit Capacity to 32 gig diagram shows 2 jumpers for master setting and 2 jumpers for cable select. Then under the General Pin Setting Diagram it shows only the 1 jumper.

This is where Digeratis expertise comes into play as I would just be guessing that no jumper is for slave setting and and the 3rd row of pins from the left are jumpered for cable select. Don't want to give erronious advice and screw the pooch so to speak. Let him look at the pictures you posted and he can coach you from there.

I thought that I should note that you are going from a decent computer to a significantly slower one in therms of the speed of your CPU. The one you had was a 2.2 gHZ (2200 mHz) processor and the other one is no faster than 1 gHZ but is probably a lot slower than that. Do you have the specs of the working one? The new CPU is no faster that about 45% of the speed of the older one. You might have trouble even running XP.

It is currently set to MA or Master. If on a cable by itself, this is fine. If another device is to be attached to the cable, it will have to be set to SL, or change both to CS.

Don't worry about the 32Gb settings - that's for older operating systems.

this is true. i assume the best thing to do would be to use the faster processor with the working motherboard. i have no idea if this is feasable. ?

i don't eally know whether to remove the original HD or not. i don't need the 4 GB it has but would like the files/settings it has.

now (i think) i have the jumper understood, what should i do next?

    thanks

Decide what you are going to do. If you install the new drive as the boot drive, you will have to reinstall a legal operating system.

As far as towns post, those CPUs are not compatible - different pin configurations - so as far as swapping CPUs into the good motherboard, so sorry, but that is not an option.
