Would like to know, if using DDR2 RAM with a DDR3 GFX card cause any Boot UP problems ?
I am a complete novice the wrong side of 50 and have just completed my 1st Build = ASUS P5N32-E Sli PLUS, MoBo: INTEL Core 2 Duo 8200: Samsung SATA Dual Layer, Lightscribe DVD RW: Samsung SATA 500 Ghz HDD + Samsung SATA 160 Ghz: BFG Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT Gfx Card: PSU 650w.
Have hit a snag, on power up I get no visuals or beeps, have removed all Drives and RAM except Gfx card, on doing so I get 1 long and 2 short beeps which indicates the graphics accelerater has a fault, the monitor is working but tells me it has no input. When I Add a 1Ghz RAM stick I get no beeps at all.
Any Answers are much appreciated. Davea

Graphics DDR and RAM DDR are not dependent so yes they are mixable. No problem.
Do you have 2 x PCI_E 6 pin power leads connected to the graphics card?
If so and if there were an AUX PCI_E 4 pin molex on the motherboard did you leave it disconnected.
-
Thanx jephree for a fast reply, the Gfx card can only accomodate 1 X 6 pin power supply which is dedicated and connected from the PSU, I havn't got an AUX PCI_E 4 pin molex on the MoBo, I have checked using user manual and I cant see one visibly. DaveA

Are you in the top PCI_E slot?
-
Yes, I have tried the bottom PCI_E slot but I get the same result. If I tried a different Gfx card, although it has an AGP interface I hope I can eliminate a fault with the MoBo.
Watch this space.

Are you sure is RAM is compatible with the motherboard?
That motherboard has no AGP slots. It is all PCI_E.

I'd suggest taking it all apart and start from scratch.
If possible try to run the board outside the case or if not possible verify that all your case spacers are in proper and any board guards given are in place. In other words ensure there is no short between the motherboard and the case.
You may or may not wish to reseat the CPU. Are you sure it was installed in the proper orientation? Did you use the Thermal Compound properly?
Are you sure you made the proper power connections? 24/20 pin main plus 4/8 pin CPU? CPU fan?
At this point connect the case leads then try to start it. Nothing else. No RAM No GPU. Nothing.
Does it BEEP? It should constantly BEEP.
If so then put in one stick of RAM and try again. Again it should beep but it should be a different beep.
If so add the graphics card & monitor and start again.
What happens now?

Thanks Jephree, I did as you said, checked all connections and MoBo spacers etc, MoBo is clear of case. On power up with no Gfx card or RAM I get one long beep and two short beeps. When I install one RAM stick I get no beeps. I have got 4 X 1gb RAM sticks and have tried them all individually and get the same result. They are : GEIL 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL=4-4-4-12 GX22GB6400UDC.
The reason I bought them was Overclockers reccomended them to go with the ASUS MoBo.
You're correct in saying the MoBo has only PCI-E and no VGA interface.
I first connected MoBo using fibre washers and have now removed them to get a better earth from MoBo to Case.
-
When I say a better earth, I noticed round the holes in the MoBo several small dots of solder and the screw heads are able to touch them making the board connect to the case.
As you said run the board out of the case, I am thinking that the board should be isolated from the case. Please advise, many thanks.

Yes the board should be isolated and INSULATED from the case. Any solder touching the case will short out your new motherboard and possibly trash it. Digerati is the resident expert on this kind of stuff.

Here in this thread is a good description of using standoffs on Motherboard.
