Graphics Card Advice
Hi all, i'm danius - new to D.A.L
I have a question;
I'm in the process of upgrading my pc, i currently have a dreadfull ram size of 256, in which i've purchased two 512 chips from crucial, hopefully they are the right ones. . i've done extensive research and apperntly they are so i'm hoping for the best.
My harddrive is fine for me at the moment, it holds 80gigs i don't really need more.
I play alot of the latest games so my computer is pretty outdated, and this is why im upgrading.
as for the question about my graphics card, its currently junk.
I was wondering if anybody could direct me to a good graphics card that would work on some of todays latest games, for example multiplayer 3d games .
I want it to run smoothly on these type of games not choppy like it currently does.
My Specs are:
AWARD_ (ECS ELITE GROUP. 741GX-M)
80GB HardDrive.
256MB RAM ( 1GB When order arives)
AMD Athlon (TM) Xp 2400+
2.00ghz
OS: Windows XP Professional.
- I'm looking for one thats not over the top either, like a working mans budget, im not looking to spend thousands on the latest e-bling!
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to D-A-L.
We need to know the make and model of your motherboard to know the slot type.
We also need to know about your PSU. How many Watts and also the make and model would help.
Most modern graphics cards require modern PSU's. This applies to PCI_E cards.
If your motherboard only has AGP then we need to know that.
If you do not know your motherboard ID try using CPU_Z under Mainboard:

Sorry I missed your mobo in the first post:
ECS ELITE GROUP. 741GX-M
Anyway that is AGP 8X.
Here is a quick choice:

Other models available:

This graphics standard has been replaced by PCI_E so even the high end cards in this form factor are limited.
The Nvidia 7600 series is/was the peak of this form.

all those video cards are decent models, just about the same thing, just from different manufacturers. personally, with that year vid cards, if ur PSU is outdated, then ATI may do better as they have been a lil less power hungry in the past (their latest has changed that but hey) they also make versions of the NVIDIA 8600 and ati 2600 in AGB if you want directX 10 support. granted, AGB is slow compared to PCI_E, but its still faster then PCI, and trust me ive used a PCI card in the past, and while it was a good card the PCI bottleneck was annoying lol. just make sure that if u go with the 7600, or even the newer 8600, make sure your power supply can handle it.

well, I take that back about nvidia having an AGB 8600, i thought they did, but it seems either im wrong or their hard to find. however, ATI has several models available. the first 2 are ATI radeon 2600s, their midrange cards from last year, both good brands, however I can speak from experience when I say sapphire is the best, the last one is the ATI 3850, which is their modern high end card, just below the 3870, good card, but if you go with that, considering all youve told us about the age of the system i can almost garentee you you will need to upgrade your PSU while your at it, the new ATI cards, unlike their predecessors, are extremely power hungry.

Hi danius I noticed in you're in England, I use Ebuyer
have a look here http://www.ebuyer.com/product/125014

Here is an NVIDIA model from the same site:

Just to clarify: the form factor is AGP.
NVIDIA stop producing new AGP formats with the 7000 series.

Goes to show you how well I keep up with nvidia, hehe, i stopped usin nvidia ages ago cuz i never found one i was impressed with. a friend let me borrow an 8600 while back and i liked it, surprisingly, but was still more impressed with ATIs lineup. anyway, yeah, so if you want nvidia for an AGB, looks like 7000 series is the way to go, if you want directx10, looks like ATIs your only option.
