My approach to a gaming PC is start with the graphics card and work backwards as it were.

    The 8800GTX remains top shelf:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130072

Two could be used (SLi) depending on budget.

Although the 8900 might be coming soon.

I'd review that board more carefully. Some shaky reviews at Newegg.

You should not need to replace the CPU cooler and if you do it cancels warranties on the CPU. Also one board review mentions no room for some coolers. Liquid cooling is always a good option.

The only gaming advantage to Vista is DirectX 10. There are not many games using 64 bit but there are a few and maybe more in the future. Otherwise they just run as 32 bit.

I use XP 64 bit on my gaming machine but I do nothing else with that computer but game. 64 bit limits you as far as some other software and drivers are concerned.

Decent CPU and PSU although I prefer Enermax or Thermaltake as manufacturers.

    Well that GTX is $400.

As to PSU I'd prefer this: $155

The CPU either the Quad: $540

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115027

Or the Duo if the Quad is too expensive: $330

We're already talking near $900 with just the GPU/CPU/PSU

    We still need motherboard/RAM/HDD/DVD/Case/OS

Perhaps we should start over with more moderate products?

No, thats good bro...I have $800 and will get more in the next 2 months so, by mid April I should have all my conponents. HD/DVD/CD shouldn't be a lot.

You list what you think will build me a gaming computer so, I can be set for a long time. so...MB?

Will get back to you. Need to run out for a few.

If you choose the Core Duo we can lower the PSU and also get a cheaper mobo.

But if you want the Quad we need to stay fairly high end across the board.

Yea I want to go with Quad. I don't know if I want to run SLI or not. I think one good video that you mentioned should be all I need right? If not we can go SLI.

I would run a single 8800GTX over any SLi. The only SLi I would run is two 8800GTX which is 2 X $400 = $800 for graphics alone.

    As to motherboards:

A very high end board. Perhaps the highest at the moment.

ASUS Striker II Formula LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131255

    $329.99

    A high end board:

ASUS MAXIMUS FORMULA LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131227

    $249.99

This board will work and is about the cheapest that will.

ASUS P5K-V LGA 775 Intel G33 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131184

    $134.99

    Newegg lists many between $100 & $200

So, I run one video card, is there a big difference in the first of the two MB you listed? Is there a good board this isn't SLI if I run just one video?

Would I need a high end PSU if I only run one card?
