Upgrading Compaq Presario 6000 processor
According to the video converter software, I will have to upgrade my processor for it to run properly. I wanted to know would this be okay to do without damaging my computer?

Can you pick out your specific model here:

You need to find out what CPU's the motherboard will support.
Also what is the requirement of the software?

Here is the full technical specs for that model: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...240233&lang=en
Compaq only recognise it as supporting up to Pentium 4 2.0GHz processors. If you fitted one of these, you might be able to compensate for the 0.4GHz shortfall by beefing up the RAM and graphics card in the PC.
The software will probably still work with a 2.0GHz processor - it's just that it's going to run slower than what the software creators would consider to be acceptable.
In fact, there are Pentium 4 processors that use the same motherboard socket type (478) as your Compaq and the same Front Side Bus (FSB) speed (400MHz) that go up to 2.4GHz and possibly even 2.6GHz and 2.8GHz, although I'm not too sure about the latter. It might be worth getting one just to try it and see. Often, manufacturers don't document support for faster processors simply because those faster speeds weren't in production when the manufacturer was writing their technical documentation. Upgrading to the latest BIOS version is always a good idea to get the fastest available processor support as well.
You can find these processors on Ebay from as little as $20 delivered.
Hope all that helps

Reinstalling XP?
So it used to work with XP?
If so why are you reinstalling?
If the hardware ran XP in the past it should run it now.
..................
I would seriously consider a new laptop rather than upgrading something like this.
Yet again your problem might lay elsewhere.

Can you determine the exact model from this list?

Sorry; don't know why I was thinking laptop.
The CPU itself would really have no control or relationship with the heatsink fan.
During your changes you are using a thermal compound: yes?
How much RAM is there?
Even with a 1.2GB CPU you should be at the bare minimum of using XP.
However any install issues usually relate to hardware problems.
