Upgrading PC
Hi,
I want to upgrade my computers' components but i don't know where to start and how much it would cost me. I can spend up to about £1000 but i get paid £550 each month. Not like any of you need to know.
I have the link to the computer i have got:
http://support.packardbell.com/uk/it...4330801&t=1413
Computer is not a very good computer i know, but with the upgrades it will become better (:
-
What is your main goal in upgrading?
With your budget you could also get a new computer or even build your own.
Or do you want to stick with the Packard Bell?
If the latter what exactly would you like to see change?
-
Upon further review that is a fairly decent computer.
How much RAM do you have?
This is perhaps your best bet to upgrade.
-
I just want it to mainly run quicker!
My ram is 1022MB
Also, what would you suggest to make the noise from the computer quiet instead of becoming really loud when running at full speed? I know you can get noise-reducers but i don't know which one would suit my computer or if it would not do much!
-
You could double the RAM. If you choose to do so get a matching "stick".
That CPU was Intel's first dual core for PC's. Again a very decent piece of hardware.
The fan speed corresponds to the CPU load.
There are a variety of custom fans/heatsinks for Intel socket 775.
Whether or not they would fit the case is another issue.

As to running quicker: do you have some comparison? Another computer that you have used and prefer? If so what are those specs?
What are you doing with the computer? Games? Video editing? ???
If you are referring to the Internet being slow this could be a completely different issue.
-
I will double the RAM, im sure they are only two rams that i can get for my computer without changing other components. I will most likely get the same stick.
I cannot compare the computer speed to another computer i have used, its mainly slow to start up programs and to boot.
I am mainly using it for games and also for personal use.
Just to check,
the graphics card for this computer is fine for games??
-
It is a good basic card. nVidia GeForce 7300 SE. Only 64MB memory.
You can upgrade this certainly. The latest series are 8000 models with up to 768MB memory.
There are other requirements for the extreme high end but you can certainly improve on what you have without going to the top.
An 8600 with 512MB memory is within your reach for @ $150 US as long as you have at least a 350Watt PSU in there.
I just installed one on one of my older systems today:

This will certainly improve your graphics.
Here also is a gaming scan:

Also: do you clean out your temp files and run a defrag etc. ?
-
Hi,
Oh right, i am taking off my case shortly to find out about my PSU!
I have used that gaming scan and i have checked out all the games i mostly play and most of them pass apart from one but thats something to do with windows vista. Something i would never get, but all good from those scans!
I do run a defrag once a month, and temp files i check weekly!

To continue one from the graphics, the link you gave is American and i am in England!
Would this be the same graphics card or better or worse?

The second one looks like the same card I listed:

The first one has HDTV out and only half the RAM at a significantly higher price. Probably due to the HDTV function.
