    Angry Ram Urpgrade Issues :(

    Hi all

    I have an
    ACER ASPIRE T180
    AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Corse Processor 4200+ 2.21GHz
On board NVIDIA graphics card (sharing memory - 256MB)
    VISTA

It was running on 2x 512 ACER DDR2 PC2-4300 chips of RAM. It has 4 slots. I wanted to stick two more in (working in pairs), so i went and bought some PNY DIMM DDR2 PC2-4300 chips (which for some ridiculous reason contained PC2-5300 chips)

Anyhow. In they went. clicked in to place and all the rest of it. hooked up the desk top, turned it on.....booted up.....

It turns off all the time.
It freezes occasionally before it even finishes loading.
It occasionally beeps at me then reboots
It just wont let me get into windows. i might be lucky and get to the Desktop but thats it!

It has run its own doagnostic but only reccomends system restore as an option (damn you vista programmers!!)

Now i know the speed of the chips are different, but surely this isn't what is causing the PC not to work??

I tried to boot it in Safe mode, and hey presto!! here i am typing a life story. but as soon as i try it in normal mode, its goes down the pan again.

What do you think is up?

Any help would be greatly greatly greatly appreciated.

    many thanks

    Chas

Its important that the ram can match.

Go to www.crucial.com and there is a free scan to see what ram is compatible.

Oh and if possible go into system and check if your computer even detects the ram.

I did the memory advisor tool on crucial, and the PC2-5300 is comptible,

    Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-8500 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Thanks for the quick reply Wickety

When i boot up in Safe Mode, and check SYSTEM in Control Pannel, The RAM is showing up.

I used crucial too, it picks up the RAM and indicates that PC2-5300 is compatible.

Any other suggestions? The fact that the computer works fine in Safe Mode, do you think its a system setting, or problem with the fact my Graphics card shares the memory? Arrrggghhh. so cross.

    from Crucial:
    Your system configuration
    2GB Total

    2GB current memory
    512MB
    512MB
    512MB
    512MB

    0 empty slots
    Currently installed memory:
    512MB
    512MB
    512MB
    512MB

    Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200,DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400,DDR2 PC2-8500 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Have you turned off Auto Restarts? Through system?

This Should then take you to a blue screen when your computer restarts/turns off.

It will have some error messages, write them down and post them up.

Thats asuming it even takes you to a blue screen.

    na.

It made the computer start up, and just as i got cosy, the screen went all funny. kinda froze and went pixelated and slightly distorted. was strange.

I rebooted and only got as far as the login screen
tried again and it wouldn't get to the login screen at all!!

I've taken the old RAM out and am running the New stuff now and its fine so i know the New stuff works ok. and when i try with the old stuff, it works ok too.

    Cant underdtand it really.

    Anymore ideas?

Sorry bout all this, really appreciate your help.

    PS no blue screen tho

Ok, Go into "Event Viewer" Get there by going through Control Pannel > Adminstrive Tools > Event Viewer.

Look for red X's, Try finding ones that relate to the current situation.

My current guess is that the RAM might not be compatible with eachother.

What two brands are your RAM?
