    Replacing hard drive-experimenting

    Today i noticed i had a 40 gb hard drive that was in my windows 98 pc that i would like to use in my xp that had a hard drive failure

    what steps need to be done for me to acomplish this

    also i have the 6 recovery disc i have for the xp. i do not have the xp install cd so is this ok to use?

    if every thing goes according to plan

    Physically just move the hard drive from the '98 computer to the XP replacing the old (dead) one.

    You will need a Retail version of XP with a distinct Product Key from here.

    What "6 recovery disc" are you referring to? The floppy boot disks? They do nothing but prepare for the CD or load the Recovery Console.

    i hope maybe i can find the cd any idea what it would look like

    If the Operating System was pre-installed then either:

    1) they supplied a Recovery CD

    2) they supplied instructions on how to create your own

    3) they installed a Recovery partition accessed via a hotkey on boot

    my pc had the recovery partition which where the 6 recovery cds come in?

    What is the make and model of the computer?

    What do these 6 CDs say on the labels?

    If the Recovery partition is on a "dead" drive it won't be of much use.

    Why do you say the drive has "failed"? What exactly happened/happens?

    1.model: compaq persario S4020WM

    2.They say Compaq Recovery 1-6 there on disc made by myself

    3.Pc gives me stop errors errors for 100%of the time now even when i try to do pc recovery

    errors 0x50, 0x7E , and 0xD1 mostly same errors we disscused in my old topic
