Those RAM figures don't sound quite right. I'm guessing that the Compaq is reporting 1024MB (1GB) for RAM, with 8MB shared for graphics and 2MB for a BIOS cache or something, whilst the Acer is showing 1024MB (1GB) with 128MB shared graphics and 2MB BIOS cache. If this is true, then the Acer will have better graphics power for games, etc. and, despite having less free RAM, would probably still be as good for running multiple intensive applications as the most intensive applications tend to be games and graphics / video editing applications which need good graphics processing.
As a general rule, I don't like Compaqs (although, to be fair, it's many years since I've used one) but I do think that Acer deserve quite a bit of respect for the laptops that they are making. Acer have always been a "value" brand at the low end of the market but they've been doing it for years and years - and they're doing it well.
Acer's latest laptops such as the Aspire 5101 tend to support 4GB of DDR2/667 memory, which is brilliant and basically means you're unlikely to reach the limit of its upgrade potential, even with Windows Vista.
So you'd think that I'd easily choose the Acer. However, I personally hate AMD processors. I haven't used the latest Turion but, in my opinion, what they've been making for the last few years before that has been rubbish. The AMD K6/2 was much better than Intel's equivalent but that was about 13 years ago and they've been falling more and more behind with what they've brought out since. I would much prefer the Intel Core Duo processor. Of course, I am biased towards Intel because I spend many hours every day using business applications - Internet, email, Word, Excel, accounts programs, etc. And that's also what all of my business customers do, so I always buy them Intel processors. Gamers tend to think that AMD is better for them - I suspect, therefore, that AMD might be better in any graphics-intensive environment.
So there you have it - lots of things to think about and I personally wouldn't have either of them! Sorry. If you can find a similar Acer Aspire with an Intel Core Duo (or a Core 2 Duo would be even better), then go for it.

I agree with Djnaffy, 894 of ram?
Never heard of it (very unusual) Are you Buying from a shop or is it custom built etc etc?
In my experience AMD is usually the better for Gaming and Intel is superb for multi tasking, Although i cant say that you would notice a huge difference in the Two when gaming id thats what you want it for.
I would choose the 1st one listed as im not all that keen on AMD (But thats just my two cents)
Let us knowwhat u get.
Cheers
