Unhappy Compaq Presario 6000 Hard Drive

    Hi

I have A Compaq Presario 6000 and I was advised to buy the hard drive listed below.

    Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 16MB 7200RPM

However once I tried to install it I realiesd the connectors are the wrong size and I now believe my computer has an ATA connector and needs an ATA drive.

Could anyone advise if there are any way that the SATA hard drive would be compatibale with my computer. I am unsure if there is such a thing as extension cables and could not find anything on the Compaq support site

    Thanks

    What is the exact model?

In general they look like ATA boards

You could get a PCI SATA controller card:

    Or get a ATA/SATA adapter:

    Hi jephree

    My exact model is

    Compaq Presario 6020EA Desktop PC.

I came across this one on Amazon, which I think looks ok, would you mind having a quick look?

Your help is very much appreciated, technical computering sends me into melt down.

    Here is the computer:

I see a couple of other problems: it lists a max hard drive size of 120GB. Plus I am sure the SATA II would not work as SATA II. There is a jumper on SATA drives to revert to SATA I and you would need to make this change as well. This affects transfer rate. It requires a SATA II motherboard to run SATA II as SATA II but again you can revert them to SATA I. All that being said I am uncertain as to the GB limitation but it is clearly stated by HP.

That adapter you link to is not what you want. That would fit on an ATA drive so you could hook it up to a SATA motherboard. You need a motherboard ATA to SATA hard drive adapter or again a PCI SATA controller card. The controller card will be the easiest to find.

I was able to return the hard drive that I drive and will attepmt to but the right one this time. I also think I will e-mail HP regarding the max hard drive size.
