    Overclocking?

i know nothing about overclocking. the only thing i know about it is that it's risky and it increases system performance.

so my question here is, is overclocking really that risky? i'm under the general opinion that overclocking leads to fried out graphics cards, processors, motherboards and RAMs.

and is overclocking really that good? as in does it really increase performance significantly?

Not really no. If you know what you're doing, its safe and just like running an registry editor in a sense. Only the hardcore, extremely unlucky or ignorant-yet-hasty tend to destroy components.

The main thing is, overclocking is a hit and miss. You might be able to get something uber good on your hardware and setup while another with the same may not get anything at all!

Yes, definitely. Most of your CPU chips, graphics cards and RAM out there in retail shops are just a lower spec model but then "overclocked" to newer levels and resold under a new part number by the manufacturer

Thats why the overclockers just get something for $200 and make it equivalent in performance to something of $1000

Such as the Intel Conroe; Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme and Core 2 Quad chips, just to name a few.

Same difference between the GeForce 8800GTX and the XFX 8800GTX XXX.

I don't know Kaistar.. there is the all famed OC Bible... it covers overclocking pretty much fuilly but is usually for extremists

    I've never owned a 7300GS myself

    Here check these out: http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...27076970299593

According to what I've seen, the card doesn't OC apart form ASUS's offering. I'm not sure though a google on it and a lot of reading will give you a good idea on what to try

seeing his FEAR settings really tempts me to do that man. how come you say only ASUS cards offer OC? dont get that part. Card brands affect?

Sorry been away, my Windows install bust!

If it wasn't for my Linux installs, I wouldn't be able to get online either.

Yeah, basically the ASUS cards are better to OC- can go pretty high up from stock clocks and give a good performance gain. Many of the other 7300GS don't. Each brand tweaks their card in many ways, and they differ. Some allow OC and others don't. Generally on a 7300GS the OC capacity is very small... like not even 50MHz extra many claim

You can try it and see for yourself. You may have a gem, which is possible. There are always a bunch of them uber quality cards passed out along with in batch. They tend to perform better in all ways than the majority of the same type of cards.

woa. what happened to your Windows?

thanks for your reply nonetheless. very informative. i remember once reading 9800 or 9700 cards being shipped of as 9600 cards. the old ATI graphic cards lol.

tempted to overclock but i guess i'll do more research on it before i attempt anything. and from what i know right now, my com ain't suitable for any form of overclocking. sad case. buying a new com is so expensive.

Yeah best off waiting till the new components arrive one after another, then the older ones that are the best now will be much much cheaper. Very possibly 50% cheaper.

Windows is just a beast as usual. This time its messed up my net connection after restarting. And there is nothing that is able to fix it, not even a repair install. This just looks like a bug in XP. The worst part is all my work, hacks, customizations, programs and tools are on there and I don't have another 500GB HDD here.

When I run this from command prompt:
    netdiag /test:winsock /v
    I get
Failed to get information for a network adapter. The error occurred was: The pipe is being

closed. <232> [FATAL] Cannot find TCP/IP configuration from the registry
After doing everything possible!! No one seems to have a clue and certainly not me anymore. All hardware and drivers are fine though.
