Is this a new problem? Did the drive ever work?
One thing to try:
right click My Computer then click Manage then Device Manager
hit the + next to DVD/CD ROM drives
right click the drive in question and choose UNINSTALL
Then reboot the computer.
-
yes the drive worked up to this morning with no problems
i have uninstalled already and still no luck
(and sorry, i think this is the wrong forum)

Just to verify:
You actually see this under My Computer:
???? (E: )
The question marks and all?
-
yes, i havent a clue what it means

Is this a Dell Laptop?
What is the exact make and model?
Did the drive ever work OK?
You might check your DMA/PIO settings as seen here:

i checked that earlyer
my laptop is a acer aspire 3692WLMi
my drive was working perfectly yesterday
on thing i did do today was install intel chipset drivers through empowering technology ( a program for acer laptops) because whenever i plugged in a usb device it wouldnt install the driver, even when i put in the cd, but that is sorted now, the only problem is my dvd drive
the drive can read cds but i cant send a file to a blank cd

I am getting no response from any Acer web sites at the moment.
I would check for a Firmware update on that drive.
-
i have ran the firmware upgrade but it was the same as the old one so that wouldnt have made any difference
-
You could run a System restore but that would remove the Chipset drivers if it works.
Other than that I would suggest contacting Acer. Sorry I have no other ideas at the moment.
Maybe someone else will.
